Default Coaching Women's Lax

I've done guest appearence's at my little sister's lax practices and was thinking about getting involved in coaching hs girl teams in my area. What are some drills/exercises that you guys(girls) would suggest and what do your coaches run at practice?

Mostly looking for female input here, because, even though it is mostly guys on these boards and you all have great suggestions, I'm one of you and could just ask myself if I wanted a guy's opinion.

most girls run with a stride length that is not conducive to attaining their maximum sprint speed, here is a drill you can run every practise to teach maximum stride length. you will need 11 pilons or markers for the ground 1) find the average height of your team eg. 5ft 6
2) set the 1st pilon down then measure 5ft 4in and set the 2nd, then 5'6, 5'8. 5'10, then 6'4 for the rest. start the girls back 10 ft and have them jog to the first pilon then sprint through the rest reaching out their foot to touch beside the pilon, this will teach them to take longer strides using less effort for faster results, I had the girls go thru one and at the end I had them come back again thru another set of pilons, it keeps them moving, hope it helps

Heyy, I play highschool lacrosse and I thought I would help you out. Even though the girls may hate it, you have to condition them. Our preseason happens in gyms since its still wet and cold so we do alot of sprints, jumproping, push-ups, crunches, jumping-jacks, etc. One of the most common sprints we do is when you go 25% 50% 75% then 100% over the course of several minutes. Alot of the conditioning has stations too, so we are always moving. For more of the actual drills indoors we do alot of wall ball, shuttle lines,a star drill, we work on moves, and do small scrimmaging. Outdoors we still keep up with the conditioning (long runs,zig-zags,short sprints, sprinting up hills) because the girls have to get used to the grass, how the ball roles/bounces, and definitely ground balls. Once we were outside we did alot of scrimmaging to the goal, shooting, and still passing. We try to get the easy stuff out of the way in the gym so we can work on the important stuff outside. It's also important to give the girls a few minutes to mess around with the stick before practice, and put in a couple of fun drills. You should stress that everyone gets along as well .. no cliques.. they all have to play together, so they should get used to eachother. Another big thing is COMMUNICATION we would run sprints if we weren't always talking through drills... If you need any clarity on anything or a better descriptino let me know I was kind of limited on time. Good Luck and Have Fun!!

Some simple passing drills can be spiced up if you add some dodges into them. example;
two lines across from eachother {fair distance} a girl from one line { lets call her girl one} jogs out with the ball, the girl from the other line { lets call her girl two} sprints, making a cut to the girl with the ball. girl one makes a good, controlled pass, girl number two makes a good catch and continues running toward the other line as if it was the field. girl number one is now on defense she must defend girl number two all the way down until she reaches the next line, then girl number one sprints to get into the oppisite line.
you can use this drill in many ways, such as ground balls, two v two, dodges, oppisite hands && anything in their abilities.

you can also work on all types of shooting, defensive skills, offensive skills, etc.

GROUND BALL DRILLS!!!! always have to have ground ball drills because it can always use work you make two lines and you stand in the middle have the two girls that are up turn around then you toss the balls out so it rolls the you say go and they 2 girls going turn around and go for a 1v1 for the ground ballwho ever wins passes it back to you. GROUND BALLS WIN GAMES! also shuttles or lines drills and have them face each other and pass do different passes like strong hand, weak hand, ground balls too and ground balls away,just different passes to get them to know there stick and there strenghts.
