U.S. U-19 Lacrosse Team Wins Final Exhibition
Tim Donovan (Parkton, Md./Loyola Blakefield/Johns Hopkins), Craig Dowd (East Northport, N.Y./Northport/Georgetown), Andrew Feinberg (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh/Brown) and Dean Gibbons (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City/Harvard) each scored three goals as the U.S. Under-19 men's lacrosse team defeated a Washington state area all-star team 21-2 in Seattle on Sunday in its final exhibition game before beginning play in the International Lacrosse Federation U-19 World Championship on July 3.
The 12-team ILF U-19 World Championship is being held in British Columbia, Canada. The U.S. opens play on July 3 against the Iroquois Nationals and the championship game is slated for July 12. The U.S. has won all five ILF U-19 world championships (1988, 1992, 1996, 1999 and 2003) that have been conducted and is a perfect 29-0 all-time heading into this year's championships.
Sunday's win allowed the U.S. team to go 4-0 in its four regulation exhibition games. The U.S. team was trailing 7-6 at halftime to a New Jersey All-Star team on June 14 when the second half was canceled due to lightning and storms. Since that game, the U.S. has outscored its last three opponents by a combined total of 53-15.
Ryan Young (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset/Maryland) helped get the U.S. offense going with five assists while faceoff specialist Matthew Dolente (Phoenixville, Pa./Malvern Prep/Johns Hopkins) won 13-of-14 draws in the game. Goalies Tyler Fiorito (Phoenix, Md./McDonogh/Princeton) and Adam Ghitelman (Syosset, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor/Virginia) combined for six saves.
