Default Maryland Releases 2008 Men's Lacrosse Schedule

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland men's lacrosse coach Dave Cottle has released the Terps' 2008 schedule. The schedule features nine games against 2007 NCAA tournament teams, including eight that finished the season ranked in the USILA coaches' poll.

The Terps are coming off last year's 10-6 campaign that saw them reach the NCAA tournament for the 30th time in the program's history. Maryland will return six starters, including third team All-America midfielder Dan Groot and goalie Brian Phipps, the 2007 ACC Freshman of the Year.

"This is a challenging schedule, but one that we're very excited about," said Cottle. "We have a young, talented team, so I'm eager to see how we progress throughout the season."

Following three weekends of preseason scrimmages with Ohio State, Loyola, Delaware Princeton, Harvard and Binghamton, the 2008 schedule kicks off with three-straight road games. Maryland opens at Georgetown on Feb. 23 before traveling to Emmitsburg, Md., to face Mount St. Mary's on Feb. 26.

The first weekend of March finds Maryland playing its first ACC game of the season at 2007 national runner-up Duke on March 1. The Terps then have a quick turnaround for their first home game of the season on March 3 against 2007 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) champion Providence.

The team hosts Towson on March 8, before playing a Friday night game at UMBC on March 14. The Terps then have another quick turnaround as they host Air Force on Sunday, March 16.

The Terps conclude their ACC schedule with back-to-back games with North Carolina and Virginia the last two weeks of March. Maryland visits the Tar Heels on March 22, before hosting the Cavaliers on March 29. The Maryland-UNC game will be televised by ESPNU, while television for the Virginia game is still being negotiated.

Another pair of nationally televised games on ESPNU follows as the Terps host Navy in primetime Friday, April 4 and travel to Homewood Field for the 104th meeting between Maryland and arch-rival Johns Hopkins on April 12.

Maryland then hosts Penn on April 29 before traveling to Charlottesville, Va., for the 2008 ACC Tournament, which will be held at Virginia's Klöckner Stadium on April 25 and 27.

The final tune-up before the NCAA tournament comes on "Senior Day" on May 3 against Yale. The NCAA Tournament will begin on the weekend on May 10-11 and conclude with the National Championship game on Memorial Day, May 26, in Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.

Default Towson Extends Tony Seaman's Contract Through 2010

TOWSON, Md. – Towson University has extended the contract of head men's lacrosse coach Tony Seaman through the 2010 season, it has been announced by Director of Athletics Mike Hermann.

"Towson is fortunate to have one of the most successful college lacrosse coaches in the country directing its program," Hermann said of the Tigers' coach. "Tony has assembled a top notch staff and has led our program to success on the field during his nine years heading our program."

Entering his tenth season as the Tigers' coach, Seaman has led the program to a 77-56 record and four conference championships. After capturing the 2001 America East championship and advancing to the NCAA semi-finals, he led the Tigers to three consecutive Colonial Athletic Association titles that earned Towson automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament. Seaman coached the Tigers to the first round of the NCAA Tournament as an at-large team last year.

"To be able to continue my tenure at Towson University as the Head Lacrosse Coach is both a privilege and a challenge that I welcome with open arms," Seaman said. "President Robert Caret and Athletic Director Mike Hermann have a long-range vision for Towson Athletics that has our lacrosse program playing a key role, and I am very excited to play a part in making that vision a reality."

Seaman has been selected as Coach of the Year in both the America East Conference (2001) and the Colonial Athletic Association (2003, 2004). He was named as Towson University's Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2004.

Seaman, who is in his 27th season as a college head coach, has compiled a career record of 241-129, which ranks seventh among active Division I coaches.

"The student-athletes in the men's lacrosse program have succeeded academically, served in the community and have represented the University well," Hermann said. "Plus, Tony's experience and leadership is felt, not only in the lacrosse program, but throughout our department."

The Tigers, who posted a 9-7 record last year, will begin their 50th year of college lacrosse on February 23 when they host Loyola College at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium at 1:00 p.m.

Default Princeton Names Team Captains for the 2008 Season

Dan Cocoziello, Alex Hewit and Bob Schneider will be Princeton's three captains for the 2008 men's lacrosse season, head coach Bill Tierney announced. Cocoziello and Hewit have been teammates since the seventh grade at Delbarton School in North Jersey. Cocoziello, a defenseman, and Hewit, a goalie, were named the top players at their positions in Division I lacrosse for the 2008 season by Inside Lacrosse. Schneider, a midfielder, is a veteran scorer from Malvern, Pa.

"Alex Hewit assumed the captain's reigns of of the 2008 team, shortly after our last game in 2007," said Princeton head coach Bill Tierney. "He took off with that role in amazing fashion and has led the team through its summer transition and into our successful fall campaign, both on and off the field. As great a player as Alex is, he will no doubt go down as one of the best captains we have had here at Princeton.

"Dan Cocoziello, despite playing all of his junior year with a broken foot and sitting out this fall while recovering, has demonstrated why he is an emotional leader of this team. He has been tireless in his efforts to meld the newcomers with the veterans, and he has remained enthusiastic while helping his teammates throughout the fall on the field, in the locker room and in the weight room.

"Bob Schneider has truly emerged since September. He has been a solid player for us throughout his career, despite some injuries. This year, however, he has shown the ability to be a dominant player and a tireless leader for the 2008 Tigers."

The three will lead the Tigers into the 2008 season beginning Feb. 23 against Canisius at the Class of 1952 Stadium. The following week, the Tigers will play in the Konika Minolta Face-Off Classic at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.

The Face-Off Classic, now in its second year, will again pair the four teams who have combined to win each of the last 15 NCAA championships, though the schedule will be reversed from a year ago.

Virginia and Syracuse will play the first game at noon, followed by Princeton and defending NCAA champ Johns Hopkins at 2:30. Both games will be on ESPNU.

Ticket prices for the event will be $10 each for groups of 10 or more, $15 for Lower Level reserved seats and $25 for Club Level seats. All seats are reserved. Fans interested in ordering tickets for the March 1 event can call the Baltimore Ravens box office at 410-261-RAVE or go to Official Ticketmaster site.
