With the Mammoth trailing 8-5 heading into the fourth quarter, Jamie Shewchuk scored back-to-back goals to spark a five-goal outburst as the Colorado Mammoth mounted a fourth quarter comeback to top the Calgary Roughnecks, 10-9, in front of 17,811 fans in the National Lacrosse League season opener at Pepsi Center.
Colorado had a slow start as Calgary jumped out to a 4-0 lead, with a pair of goals from Lewis Ratcliff and singles from Scott Ranger and Curt Malawsky. Brian Langtry finally put the Mammoth on the board at 11:31, and Calgary led 4-1 after the first quarter and 5-2 at halftime.
The West Division rivals scored three goals apiece in the third quarter, and Calgary led 8-5 heading into the final frame.
Shewchuk scored consecutive power play goals, and Josh Sims, Langtry and Jason Wulder each added singles to cap the run. Curt Malawsky cut the deficit to one goal with 3:16 remaining, but Gee Nash and the Mammoth defense held Calgary scoreless the rest of the way.
Wulder led the Mammoth (1-0) with three goals, while Langtry, Carey and Shewchuk scored two. Gee Nash earned the win in goal. Colorado next hosts the Edmonton Rush on January 12th.
Ratcliff, Malawsky and Ranger scored two goals apiece for the Roughnecks (0-1). Steve Dietrich got the loss in goal. Calgary hosts the San Jose Stealth in their home opener on January 12th.
