From Toronto to Tucson and Philly to Portland, it was going to be a very cold winter indeed. Monday, October 15th was the start to a ride that no NLL fan ever wants to take again and the NLL and PLPA would be wise not to make them take again. The NLL deadline of midnight on the 15th came and went without an official announcement either way for the 2008 season. Tuesday afternoon, what we had all feared was officially announced; the 2008 NLL season was cancelled.
Fans all over the league were outraged, wondering how the NLL and PLPA could do this to us. How could they honestly shut down and lose all of the momentum they had gained over the years? A lot of us have been around since the days of the spandex shorts, the Turbos vs. Wings, and watching the current coach of the Swarm teach some respect, box style. We’ve driven to Albany only to see the game called on account of weather, and then partied with the players till the early morning hours anyway, and we’ve had our hearts ripped out with 1.1 seconds to go in 2000 in the last professional sporting event at the Maple Leaf Garden. Through all of this, we remained loyal, stood behind our team, and now we were being asked to take a break for a year so a new CBA could get worked out that was mutually beneficial to both sides.
