Default Top guns re-sign with Mammoth

DENVER - The Colorado Mammoth re-signed some of its top offensive threats Wednesday, agreeing to terms with forwards Gavin Prout, Dan Carey and Jamie Shewchuk. The team also announced the signings of rookie forward Ryan Zordani and defenseman Bruce Murray.

Prout, whose one-year contract is pending National Lacrosse League approval, ranked fourth in league scoring last season and led the Mammoth with 89 points on the strength of 30 goals and 59 assists. The Mammoth captain made his fifth NLL All-Star Game appearance and led his team to the West Division title and its fifth consecutive playoff berth.

"Gavin is a tremendous player and has been a great leader of our team both on and off the floor," Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said. "We are looking for big things from him this season and to continue to be one of the game's best."

Prout, who has averaged better than 84 points per season during his six-year career, eclipsed the 500-point mark last season en route to his fourth All-Pro distinction.

Carey, who signed for three years, led the Mammoth with 32 goals last season and tied for second in the NLL with four game-winning goals.

Shewchuk signed a two-year deal after leading NLL rookies with 26 assists last season. He was the Mammoth's fourth-leading scorer with 53 points after the team made him its second selection in the 2006 entry draft.

Zordani, a former University of Denver standout, was selected No. 57 by Boston in the 2007 entry draft before becoming a free agent and signing a three-year contact with Colorado. He played 60 games at DU, amassing 98 points to rank third on the school's all-time scoring list.

Murray, a 6-foot-1, 260-pound veteran of six NLL seasons, signed a one-year contract with the Mammoth after being selected in the dispersal draft. He collected 17 points, 83 penalty minutes and 224 loose balls during his last thee seasons with the Arizona Sting.

Default Jax Re-sign Merrill

PORTLAND, November 21, 2007 - The Portland LumberJax have re-signed top defenseman Brodie Merrill to a two-year contract, as was announced today by Head Coach/General Manager Derek Keenan.

The first draft pick in franchise history, Merrill will enter his third season with the Jax in 2008. The former Georgetown University product is the fifth leading goal scorer in franchise history (21), third all-time in assists (51) and fourth all-time in points (72). Merrill is also the team's career loose ball leader with 410.

In 2007, Merrill led the Jax and the National Lacrosse League in loose balls collected with 196. Since the statistic became official in 1992, Merrill is one of only three players to lead the NLL in loose balls (Jim Veltman and John Tavares).

The two-time NLL All-Star also scored four goals, added 19 assists and logged 49 penalty minutes during the 2007 season.

"Brodie has been the cornerstone of the LumberJax from the moment we drafted him first overall two seasons ago," said Keenan. "He is the premier defensive/transition player in the NLL."

Merrill also boasts an extensive field lacrosse resume in only three professional seasons. He is the two-time defending Defensive Player of the Year in Major League Lacrosse and earned Rookie of the Year honors in 2006.

"The fact that Brodie has signed for two more years in Portland shows his commitment to the franchise and the city of Portland," said Keenan. "It's going to be an exciting season of lacrosse in Portland and Brodie will be leading the charge."

DENVER - The Colorado Mammoth has signed two University of Denver alumni, re-signing one of its top defensive stoppers, Tom Ethington, and agreeing to terms with dispersal draftee Matt Brown.
Ethington, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound native of Glenview, Ill., agreed to a two-year deal. He was selected 81st overall by the Mammoth in the 2002 National Lacrosse League entry draft after four seasons with the Denver Pioneers.
