Default Jax Sign Five More

PORTLAND, November 12, 2007 - The Portland LumberJax have signed defenseman David Morgan to a one-year agreement, re-signed defenseman Brad MacDonald and forwards Peter Morgan and Matt Holman to one-year deals, and signed goalie Joel Weber to a two-year agreement, as was announced today by Head Coach/General Manager Derek Keenan.

D. Morgan played with the Jax during the 2006 season, scoring one goal and adding one assist in six games of action. Morgan has also played for the New Westminster Salmonbellies of the Western Lacrosse Association. The 6'10" enforcer scored one goal and added 11 assists during the Salmonbellies run to the Mann Cup finals this season.

MacDonald was the Jax's third selection in the NLL Dispersal Draft (25th overall). With the Arizona Sting last season, MacDonald scored one goal and added two assists in 10 games of action.

"We think Brad will come right in and be a significant contributor at the defensive end in transition," said Keenan. "I've always liked his tenacity and he's an intelligent player."

The franchise leader in goals scored, P. Morgan will enter his third season with the Jax in 2008. P. Morgan scored 17 goals and added 25 assists last season.

"With the players we've added on offense so far, we think that Peter will have a bounce back season," said Keenan. "He's a very committed athlete and we expect his commitment to turn into results on the floor."

P. Morgan will also be reunited for the second time with his two brothers, D. Morgan and defenseman Rich Morgan. The three previously played together with the Jax during the 2006 season.

"We figured we'd better complete the trifecta with the Morgan brothers by signing Dave," said Keenan. "He took last season off and we really missed his presence."

Holman was one of the Jax's most productive players at the end of the 2007 season during his rookie campaign. The University of Hartford product scored 12 goals in the final four games of the season. Overall, Holman scored 14 goals and added five assists in nine games of action.

"When we finally found a spot for Matt in the line-up late last season, he contributed in a big way with hat tricks in four consecutive games," said Keenan.

Weber was drafted by the Jax in the fourth round (44th overall) of the 2007 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft. He went 7-4-1 this past season for the Whitby Warriors in Major Series Lacrosse with a goals-against-average of 7.32.

"Joel was the best goalie in the draft this year and we were fortunate to get him," said Keenan. "He plays a very similar style to Dallas Eliuk, so he will get an opportunity this season to work with the master of the athletic goalie style."

Default Two More Veterans Return To Roughnecks

Calgary, AB - Two more regulars in the 2007 Calgary Roughnecks squad have enrolled for another season.

General Manager Kurt Silcott today (Saturday, November 10) announced that goalie Andrew Leyshon and transition player Nolan Heavenor have inked new contracts.

Both deals are subject to NLL approval.

Leyshon was the Riggers No. 1 goalie last year, but following the acquisition of former league MVP Steve Dietrich, it is expected Leyshon will fight for the No. 2 spot with new signing Pat Campbell.

Campbell was the Roughnecks 1st pick in the recent Boston/Arizona dispersal draft.

"Andrew got a bit of a bad rap last year," said Silcott. "When the ball goes in the net, people always blame the goalie, though everyone knows it is not always his fault."

Silcott added, "This year, Andrew comes into camp behind Steve Dietrich and all the pressure will not be on his shoulders as it was in 2007. I look forward to his competition with Pat Campbell for the back up role."

In 82 National Lacrosse League games, Leyshon has garnered a 13.80 goals against average and a 73.91 save percentage.

Heavenor has appeared in 22 NLL games, with Calgary and Minnesota, and has collected 38 points (19 goals, 19 assists). He has also picked up 81 loose balls and 20 penalty minutes.

"Nolan showed us a lot of versatility and ability in 2007," said Silcott, "and that allowed him to have a break out year. We expect him to be even better in the upcoming campaign."

Default Stealth signs Veltman and Morris

PLEASANTON, CA -The San Jose Stealth indoor professional lacrosse team (SJSTEALTH.COM) has signed two players - Peter Veltman and Sean Morris - to one-year contracts, it was announced today.

The Stealth landed Veltman and Morris in the NLL Dispersal Draft after Boston and Arizona opted to suspend their operations for one season. San Jose selected Veltman from Arizona with the 7th pick in the first round and Morris, the talented left hander, from Boston in the second round (18th overall).

"Peter Veltman was exactly what we were looking for to compliment our team. He has the ability to play as a forward or in a transition role and brings Championship game experience, grit and great skills to San Jose. That leadership will be an asset in our locker room," Stealth Assistant General Manager Doug Locker said. "Sean Morris is a tough competitor and a very talented athlete. He was an outstanding player at the University of Massachusetts and we feel he has both the skills and the desire to be a very good player in the NLL."

Veltman played in nine games for Arizona in 2007 and recorded four goals and 10 assists while winning 43 faceoffs. Morris, one of the nation's top collegiate players at the UMass, was the third overall pick by the Chicago Machine of Major League Lacrosse in 2006. He played in all 12 games in 2007 and finished second on the team in scoring with 39 points, including a team-high 23 assists. This will be his first year playing indoor lacrosse.
