Default Hominuck Honoured By NLL

Edmonton, AB---Mike Hominuck of the Edmonton Rush was named the National Lacrosse League's Offensive Player of the Week for a breakout debut with his new club.

Hominuck was acquired by the Rush last week in a trade with the Minnesota Swarm and made his first appearance in a Rush uniform in Saturday afternoon's matchup with the defending NLL champion Rochester Knighthawks. Hominuck made the most of the occasion scoring three goals, including the game winner, and adding one assist in leading the Rush to their second straight victory in a 10-9 overtime decision.

"I had expected that Mike would be a great addition to the team and he certainly lived up to everyone's expectations immediately - in fact he went well-beyond our wildest expectations," said Rush GM/Head Coach Bob Hamley who made the move to acquire Hominuck.

Hominuck opened the scoring in the second half on a set up from Steve Hutchins and that got started the Rush's comeback from a 6-3 halftime deficit. Hominuck returned the favour and set up a goal by Hutchins that brought the Rush within one goal late in the third quarter.

His second goal of the game - an unassisted marker to begin the fourth quarter - tied the score at 7-7. Hominuck then ended the night and sent the Rush into a celebration when he notched the OT winner 1:13 into the extra frame.

Hominuck is the seventh player in Rush franchise history to receive a weekly award from the NLL. This is also the second consecutive week of action for the Rush that players were honoured by the league. Following a road win in Portland, goaltender Curtis Palidwor was named Defensive Player of the Week and Hutchins was named Rookie of the Week for their roles in the 9-7 victory.

Earlier this season, Jimmy Quinlan received the Transition Player of the Week award.

Hominuck is the second Rush player in team history to receive the Offensive Player of the Week honour following up on Chris Gill who received the award after an eight-point performance in the 2007 season opener. Pat Campbell was named Defensive Player of the Week when the Rush picked up their only win during the 2006 campaign.

Default Stealth Weekly

This Week

After a six week hiatus, the San Jose Stealth (5-4) return home tonight to face off against the Calgary Roughnecks (4-7). San Jose is coming off a heartbreaking loss against Eastern Division leader Philadelphia and is currently in second place in the Western division. The Roughnecks are also coming off a loss against Western Division leader, Colorado.

A Look at the Calgary Roughnecks

Calgary (4-7) is currently is third in the Western division, behind Colorado (6-3) and the Stealth. The Roughnecks have struggled on the road this season, winning only one of four games. Forward Lewis Ratcliff leads his team with 58 points (26 goals and 32 assists), tied for third in the NLL. The Victoria, B.C. native scored a career-high nine points against San Jose earlier this season in a 12-13 OT loss. Ratcliff is supported by Scott Ranger (49 points on 18 goals and 31 assists) and Kaleb Toth (31 points on 12 goals and 19 assists). Goalie Pat Campbell currently ranks fourth in the NLL with an11.00 GAA and a .753 SV%.

Watch it Live on B2 Network

The National Lacrosse League (NLL) and B2 Networks have once again teamed to provide live broadband broadcasts of all games for the 2008 season. For the third consecutive season, fans will be able to access their favorite team's games on the Internet via the global broadband broadcasting leader. Through the B2-NLL partnership, NLL games will be available for viewing by a global audience. Live lacrosse games will be aired through the league website, NLL.com -- Official Website of the National Lacrosse League - Home, as well as every individual team website. Fans wanting to watch NLL via B2 Networks will need a high-speed Internet connection and a current version of Microsoft Windows Media Player. Games will be sold on an individual basis for $7 (US).

Glad to be Home

The Stealth have enjoyed their success on the road, where they have amassed a league-best 4-2 record, but look forward to return to the HP Pavilion. The Stealth's last home game was Feb. 9, where they defeated the Chicago, 17-11. San Jose looks to bring their home record above .500 with a win against the visiting Roughnecks. They are currently 1-2 at home.

Z Power

Jeff Zywicki is having his third solid year in the NLL. The 26 year-old currently holds the second place spot for goals scored in the NLL (30) and is tied for fifth in assists with 56 through nine games. Most recently Zywicki picked up six points on four goals and two assists in the loss to Philadelphia. Zywicki racked up a season-high nine points (five goals and four assists) in the season opener against Calgary on January 12.

The Wizard of Coz

2007 Goaltender of the year Anthony Cosmo is having another strong year between the pipes for the Stealth. Cosmo is currently tied for second in SV% stopping .778 of his opponent's shots.

Lending a Helping Hand

Colin Doyle knows the importance of sharing. Doyle leads the Stealth and sits in fifth in the NLL in assists with 34. Doyle also has 16 goals, putting him second amongst his teammates with 48 points.

Rookie Mix

With every passing game, the Stealth rookies look better. Two week ago against Colorado, Frank Resetarits netted three goals and was named Rookie of the Week. Fellow rookie Tom Johnson added a pair of goals as well in the win against the Mammoth. Steve Panarelli has been strong on defense for the Stealth, scooping up 31 loose balls this season.

Nipping at the Heels

The Stealth snagged the top spot in the West with a great performance two weeks ago in Colorado. Forwards Luke Wiles and Frank Resetarits were given Player of the Week honors. Resetarits earned Rookie of the Week, posting three goals, as Wiles earned Offensive Player of the Week, recording seven points (three goals, four assists). However San Jose fell to second place in the West after a loss against Philadelphia last Friday. The Mammoth saw success, defeating Calgary, 11-6. Colorado and San Jose are currently the only two teams in the Western division with a record above .500.

Career Milestones

Colin Doyle came to San Jose in 2007 with an impressive resume and looks to add to his achievements this season. The 10-year veteran is nearing the 350 goal plateau (335 to date) and is approaching 500 assists (481 to date). Earlier this season, Doyle surpassed 800 points for his career (816 to date). Doyle is tied for sixth on the all time goals list with Ted Dowling, fourth in all time assists, and passed Tom "Hollywood" Marechek earlier this year for third all time in points. Gary Rosyski is nearing 250 goals (241) and Jeff Zywicki is near 100 (97).

Wiles

Last season's team leader in points, forward Luke Wiles is not far behind Jeff Zywicki and Colin Doyle. In nine games, Wiles stands third on the team with 45 points (18 goals and 27 assists). Last week, Wiles added two goals and one assists against Philadelphia. Earlier in the season Wiles scored the game winning goal at Calgary (1/12) 47 seconds into the extra period. This was Wiles' second OT winning goal in Calgary.

Star Power

The San Jose Stealth sent four players to last week's All-Star Game in Edmonton where the East outscored the West 16-15 in a dramatic OT win. Jeff Zywicki and Eric Martin were both named starters for the West and Stealth captain, forward Colin Doyle and goalie Anthony Cosmo were announced as reserve players. Doyle netted a game-high four goals for the West. Zywicki and Martin contributed with an assist a piece and Cosmo posted 25 saves in 30:31 minutes in the net.

Coaching Staff

Walt Christianson enters his third season at the helm of the San Jose Stealth. Christianson brought his defensive-minded approach and transformed the Stealth into a young, aggressive team and nearly led them to the NLL Championship game. In 2007, San Jose posted a 9-7 regular season mark, qualified for the post season for the first time since 2005 and advanced to the Western Conference Finals where they dropped a 9-7 heart-breaker to the Arizona Sting. Joining Christianson as assistant coach is Art Webster, also in his third season.

Up Next

The Stealth head out on the road again to face off against the Edmonton Rush on Saturday, March 29. San Jose crushed the Rush 11-8 when they met earlier this season on 2/23.

Default Jax And Stealth Meet In First Back-To-Back

PORTLAND, April 1, 2008 - The National Lacrosse League's trade deadline was on March 25 and the Portland LumberJax (4-7) were serious buyers as they made a significant roster move that has the team poised to push into the postseason.

The blockbuster deal sent goalie Matt King, defenseman Ian Crashley and a First Round Selection in the 2009 NLL Entry Draft to the Edmonton Rush in exchange for goalie Matt Disher and a Fourth Round Selection in the coveted 2009 NLL Entry Draft.

Disher, a nine-year veteran, brings an 11.65 goals-against-average and .750 saves percentage with him this season. The cagey veteran has been to the playoffs three times in his career, two of those appearances the last two seasons with the Minnesota Swarm.

The trade solidified a goaltending position that now features Disher, the future hall-of-famer Dallas Eliuk and rookie Joel Weber.

In a separate roster move made after the trade deadline, the Jax re-signed defenseman Bruce Alexander. A staple of the team during its first two seasons, Alexander scored six goals and added 16 assists last season in Portland. A 2007 All-Star, Alexander is sixth in franchise history in points scored (67) and fourth in assists (49).

Now, the new look Jax will play their first game since the roster moves, hosting the San Jose Stealth (6-5) at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 5 at the Rose Garden Arena. A day later, the two teams will complete the home-and-home series by playing in San Jose at the HP Pavilion at 4 p.m., less than 24 hours after playing in Portland.

The series history has been about as even as possible for the two clubs. Both have split the six meetings and San Jose has scored only one more goal than Portland in those six games. In four of the six meetings, the final score has been determined by three goals or less.

In 2006, the Jax won all three games, with two of them coming in San Jose. The Stealth evened the score in 2007, winning all three games, with two of those coming in the Rose City.

As well as San Jose has been playing, Portland is coming off its most dramatic win of the season over the division rival Colorado Mammoth. In a season-defining win, the Jax outmuscled, outhustled and ultimately out willed the Mammoth 16-15 in front of 6,182 earsplitting fans. Rookie forward Peter Jacobs sunk the game winner with 1:06 left in the fourth quarter.

Forward Derek Malawsky had his highest point scoring output of the season, tallying nine points (2 goals, 7 assists) and tying franchise high's in assists and points scored. Forward Dan Dawson matched a season-high with four goals and forward Peter Morgan tallied the ninth hat trick in his Portland career.

The win gave the Jax even more separation as the final lap of the 2008 season nears. With Colorado and San Jose sitting in the upper echelon of the West Division standings, the Jax can continue to solidify their playoff position with the back-to-back games against the Stealth.
