Default Titans lose to the Rock 14-10

Toronto, Can. - The New York Titans and the Toronto Rock each had stellar halves in their match up at the Air Canada Centre Saturday night. The Titans had a dominant first half, scoring eight goals to the Rock's three. But the Rock had the better second half, outscoring the Titans 11-2 and winning the game 14-10. The loss brings the Titans record to 1-2. Titans assistant captain Ryan Boyle was on fire in the beginning of the game against the Rock. He dished an assist to Jeff Ratcliffe for the first goal scored on the night 1:16 into the first quarter and followed it up by scoring two consecutive unanswered goals, both assisted by Titans captain Casey Powell.

Rock forward Chris Driscoll answered back over seven minutes into the game, bringing the score to 3-1. But Titans rookie Jordan Hall was able to get one more goal in off an assist from Casey Powell before the first quarter expired at 14:07.

The Rock were the first to score in the second quarter, with a goal by Josh Sanderson, chipping away at the Titans lead and bringing the score to 4-2. It took the Titans nearly five minutes to answer back, but once they did, they unleashed a firestorm.

First Pat Maddalena hit a diving shot off an assist from Ryan Boyle. Maddalena then assisted a goal by Jordan Hall. A few possessions later, Hall passed the ball to Boyle who passed the ball to Mike McLellan, who then hit a diving shot past the right shoulder of Rock goalie Bob Watson. Rock forward Kasey Beirnes scored a goal for Toronto with less than three minutes remaining in the half.

Again, Titans rookie Jordan Hall wouldn't let the Rock have the last word. He scored a goal off assist from Mike McLellan and Ryan Boyle with :13 left in the half and the Titans headed to the tunnel with a 8-3 lead.

But in the NLL, there's no such thing as a comfortable lead. The Rock came out swinging in the second half, scoring four quick goals within the first four minutes and swiftly erasing the Titans five goal lead.

For nine minutes, there was no scoring, but plenty of action. Titans transition player Jarett Park was pounded in the boards by Rock player Jon Harasym as he was bringing the ball up the field on a fast break. Shortly after, Park and Harasym's helmets and gloves came off and a boxing match ensued. Both Park and Harasym were slapped with a five minute major for roughing.

Will Park and Harasym in the box, the Rock scored one last goal with a minute left in the quarter to tie the game 8-8. The Titans went scoreless throughout the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Rock scored two goals early and took the lead for the first time in the game. But the Titans seemed to regain their composure and stage a comeback. Ratcliffe led the surge and broke the Titans 20-minute scoring drought, hitting a shot off an assist from Ryan Boyle with less than five minutes into the fourth quarter, bringing the Rock's lead to 10-9.

Shortly after Ratcliffe's goal, the Rock committed a two-minute penalty, putting the Titans in a power play situation. Casey Powell took advantage and scored a long goal, tying the game at 10-10.

While the Rock scored the next four goals to win the game, the Titans were never out of it, having several possessions and playing calm and composed offense.

The Titans won 4-9 power play possessions on the night, wile Toronto went 0-5. Titans face-off specialist Jamie Hanford won 19-28 contests at the center circle.

Ryan Boyle and Rock forward Blaine Manning were the leaders in points on the night, each scoring two goals and dishing five assists. Titans rookie Jordan Hall wasn't far behind, scoring three goals and contributing three assists.

Titans goalie Matt Vinc had 37 saves on 51 shots on the night.

The Titans open at home against the San Jose Stealth on Thursday, January 31st at 7:30pm at Madison Square Garden. Opening night will also feature the first annual "Mayor's Cup" game - played between the New York Fire Department lacrosse team and the New York Police Department lacrosse team at 5:30 pm. Default San Jose Stealth drop 11-6 decision in Colorado

Denver, Colo.-- The Stealth (1-2) possibly faced their toughest task of the season, playing a quick turn around game against an undefeated team in front of a hostile and voracious crowd. The Stealth couldn't overcome the odds and lost to Colorado Mammoth 11-6. The Stealth, after a emotional 15-13 loss to Calgary in San Jose, sacked out for about four hours before catching an early morning flight to Denver. When they got to Pepsi Arena, they were greeted by a sellout crowd of 18,007 excited fans. The circumstances put the Stealth in a fighting mood and it cost them in the penalty box. The Stealth's two first-half goals were short-handed, while the Mammoth scored all five of their first-half goals on power plays. Another fight broke out just before the half, Mammoth Jamie Shewchuk and Stealth Andrew Guindon were in the penalty box to open the second half. Colorado then extended its lead in the third quarter, beating the Stealth while playing five-on-five - scoring three third-quarter goals to the Stealth's one goal. The quarter was highlighted by a collision between Colorado goalie Gee Nash and Stealth defensiveman Steve Holmes, which further inflamed the crowd. In the second half, the undefeated Mammoth was too talented to allow a San Jose comeback, which was a shame for Stealth goalie Anthony Cosmo, who played a whale of a game. By the end of the third quarter, the Mammoth had poured 47 shots on Cosmo and scored only nine goals. He even saved one shot on his back, after getting knocked to the floor. The Stealth, meanwhile, could only muster 19 shots on goal through three quarters against the Mammoth's towering defense. Colorado extended its lead to 11-6, when Cosmo got caught out of the goal and took a spill trying to retreat. The Stealth fell to 1-2, while Colorado is now 4-0.

Default Sellout crowd helps Mammoth silence Stealth

DENVER - Dan Carey's third consecutive three-goal game and a typically balanced scoring attack enabled the Colorado Mammoth to cruise to an 11-6 victory over the San Jose Stealth on Saturday night.

The Mammoth dominated much of the game, outshooting the Stealth 58-35, and methodically pulled away in the second half. A sellout crowd of 18,007 at Pepsi Center saw the Mammoth win for the third time in as many tries at home this season, improving to 4-0 overall and remaining atop the National Lacrosse League's West Division. The Stealth dropped to 1-2.

Seven different players scored for the Mammoth, including captain Gavin Prout, who scored twice and added four assists for a game-high six points.

"I thought we moved the ball well and were patient and composed on offense," Mammoth coach Bob McMahon said. "But our defense and goaltending were very sharp tonight and allowed us to control the flow of the game."

Gee Nash earned his third victory in as many starts in the Mammoth goal this season, stopping 29-of-35 shots. Anthony Cosmo took the loss in goal for the Stealth, making 47 saves on 58 shots.

The Mammoth has not lost in seven regular-season games against the Stealth at Pepsi Center and is 34-9 all-time at home. Saturday's sellout was the first of the season for the Mammoth and the 13th in team history.

Jed Prossner's second goal of the game gave the Mammoth a 10-5 lead early in the fourth quarter and Nash allowed only one more goal the rest of the way. Josh Sims added the final goal of the game when Cosmo fell down trying to return to the net.

The Mammoth built an 8-3 lead in the third quarter, stringing together goals by Prout, Jason Bloom and Jamie Shewchuk, but the Stealth stayed in the game by scoring two of the next three.

After taking a 2-1 lead into the second quarter the Mammoth created a highlight reel of goals to extend its lead. First, Prout scored from behind the net, leaping in front and tucking the ball past Cosmo with one hand. Carey followed by driving past three Stealth defenders and scoring as he dove across the crease. Langtry then put the Mammoth up 5-1 by backing down his defender while looking to pass, but scored with a no-look shot over his right shoulder.

Cam Sedgwick scored with two minutes left in the first half to cut the Mammoth's lead to 5-2 at halftime.

Default Lumberjax held off by Roughnecks, 13-6

CALGARY, AB - The Portland LumberJax dropped their first road game of the season, falling 13-6 Saturday night to the Calgary Roughnecks (2-2) in front of 10,413 at the Pengrowth Saddledome. The Jax (0-3) were led by forward Derek Malawsky, who scored two goals and added two assists in the losing effort.

Calgary scored the first two goals of the game, but the Jax got on the board with 4:27 left in the first quarter when Dan Dawson (2 goals, 1 assist) beat Roughnecks goalie Ryan Avery stick side on a man advantage to trim the lead to one. Malawsky and Spencer Martin (0 goals, 2 assists) assisted on Dawson's seventh goal of the season. The quarter would eventually end with goalie Matt King facing the Roughneck firing line, stopping three consecutive shots to keep the deficit at one.

After a Kelly Hall goal, transition player Scott Stapleford scored 22-seconds later to cut the Calgary lead to 3-2 with 11:53 left in the second quarter. Both Dawson and Peter Morgan were credited with assists on the goal. The point was Morgan's 100th of his Jax career. He and Ryan Powell (1 goal, 1 assist) are the only two players in franchise history with at least 100 points in their Jax careers.

The scoring continued as Malawsky intercepted a pass from Avery and put one past the net minder to even the game at three with 8:59 remaining in the half. Avery was attempting an outlet pass when Malawsky stole the pass in mid-flight and scored on the two-man advantage.

The Jax got a scare mid-way through the second quarter when King took a high shoulder from Calgary's Kaleb Toth. The hit knocked the ball free from a streaking King and Scott Ranger scooped up the ball and weaved through the Jax defense to score and give the Roughnecks a one goal advantage with 7:24 left in the half.

Future hall-of-fame goalie Dallas Eliuk entered after King's hard hit and appeared in his National Lacrosse League leading 199th career game. Eliuk saved two shots and yielded one goal in the next 2:06 of action before King returned with 5:18 to play.

The half ended with three more Calgary goals to give the Roughnecks a 8-3 lead heading into the break.

Eliuk returned to start the second half and the Jax provided an instant offensive spark to back the lacrosse legend. Malawsky notched his second goal of the game on a rebound shot from Powell on a power play with 12:46 remaining in the third quarter. As he was credited with the assist, Powell has now scored at least one point in all 30 regular season games he's appeared in with the Jax and has tallied an assist in 29 straight regular season games. The last game he failed to tally an assist was on Jan. 13, 2006 in a 12-7 loss to the Arizona Sting in the first ever game for the Jax.

The Roughnecks responded with five straight goals before Powell snuck one past Avery with 4:39 left in the game. Powell has now scored at least one goal in the last five games he's appeared in.

Dawson scored the final goal of the game with 37 seconds remaining on a penalty shot as the Roughnecks had too many men on the field. The final score was 13-6 in favor of Calgary.

Eliuk ended up stopping 18 of the 24 shots (.750 save percentage) he faced in relief of King. King stopped 14 of the 21 (.667) shots he faced in two stints.

The Roughnecks were led by Avery's stellar play in goal. Goalie Steve Dietrich was scheduled to start, but was a late scratch prior to game time. Avery responded by stopping 38 of the 44 shots (.864) he faced from the Jax. Hall, Ranger and Lewis Ratcliff also supplied three goals apiece in the Calgary win.

The Jax return to action on Saturday, February 2 against the Edmonton Rush (0-3) at 6:30 p.m. at Rexall Place.

Default Toth sparks Roughnecks to 13-6 win over LumberJax

CALGARY - Although he didn't score, Kaleb Toth did his best Dion Phaneuf impression to lead the Calgary Roughnecks to a 13-6 win over the Portland LumberJax Saturday night. With the score tied 3-3 in the second quarter, Portland goalie Matt King made a save and then decided to run up the floor when he was greeted along the side boards with a thunderous hit by Toth, much to the delight of the 10,413 fans in attendance at the Saddledome.

"Dion's got nothing on me," Toth said after the game with a grin.

Scott Ranger then picked up the loose ball and easily eluded two Portland defenders before depositing the ball into an empty cage to start a five-goal outburst by Calgary (2-2) and give the Riggers an 8-3 halftime lead.

Toth said he wasn't trying to injure his former teammate with the hit.

"Matty's a competitive guy and I'm a competitive guy," said Toth, who finished the game with two assists. "He ran out of the crease and he had his head down. I didn't try to take his head off. I just stood my ground. Unfortunately I think I rang his bell a little bit. You don't want to see a guy hurt, but you've got to take every opportunity to win a game."

Defence was then the name of the game in the second half as the 'Necks outscored the Jax 2-1 in the third quarter and 3-2 in the fourth quarter to win their second game in two nights.

In his first start of the season, goalie Ryan Avery stopped 38 of 44 shots he faced.

"We focus on not giving up anything in the second half," said Avery, who improved his record as a Roughneck to 5-0.

Lewis Ratcliff notched a hat trick and four helpers to continue his torrid scoring pace in the absence of Calgary captain Tracey Kelusky, who missed his third straight game with a concussion. Ranger also scored three times and set up three others for the Riggers, while Kelly Hall, who played eight games for Portland last season, had a hat trick and a helper.

"That's the key to an offence," said Ratcliff of Calgary's well-rounded scoring attack. "If we can have three goals from a bunch of different guys we're going to be next to impossible to stop."

Nolan Heavenor (2g, 2a) and Curt Malawsky (1g, 2a) also contributed to the win, while Greg Hinman scored his first goal as a Roughneck.

Derek Malawsky led the way for Portland with two goals and two assists, while Dan Dawson (2g, 1a), Ryan Powell (1g, 1a) and Scott Stapleford (1g) rounded out the scoring.

King made 14 saves in the first half for the LumberJax, while Dallas Eliuk came on in relief and stopped 18 of 24 shots he faced.

Calgary goalie Steve Dietrich earned a well-deserved rest after a 35-save performance the previous night as the Roughnecks downed the Stealth 16-13 in San Jose.

After back-to-back games, the Roughnecks have an extended break until they return to the Saddledome turf to face the Buffalo Bandits on Friday, Feb. 8.

Default Bandits down Roughnecks 17-9

CALGARY - Simply put, things didn't go well for the Calgary Roughnecks on Friday night.

Before a 17-9 loss to the Buffalo Bandits, the Roughnecks (2-3) found out that they'd have to play without goalie Steve Dietrich and forward Tracey Kelusky, both of whom missed the contest with concussions. For Kelusky, it's the fourth straight game the Calgary captain has had to sit out.

Once the ball dropped, Calgary couldn't contain John Tavares, the all-time leading scorer in the National Lacrosse League. Tavares led the Bandit attack with two goals, including the 600th of his illustrious career, and seven assists. Tavares also tied teammate Mark Steenhuis by collecting a game-high eight loose balls.

"We didn't deserve to be in the game and we weren't in the game," said Calgary coach Troy Cordingley, who spent the last five seasons as an assistant coach in Buffalo. "We were outworked in every facet. It's frustrating that we didn't show up."

One bright spot for Calgary was the play of Curt Malawsky, who finished the game with a hat trick.

"If our team had half the heart Curt Malawsky did, we wouldn't be in this situation," Cordingley said. "He was our best player and he is our oldest player."

Chris Seller, playing his first game with the Riggers since being acquired from the Edmonton Rush on Jan. 30, scored a pair, while Kelly Hall had a goal and two assists.

Lewis Ratcliff and Jeff Shattler both had a goal and an assist, while Kaleb Toth, Greg Hinman and Scott Ranger chipped in with two assists each. Nolan Heavenor scored once for the Roughnecks, whose two-game winning streak came to an end.

Ratcliff finished the game with 13 shots on goal, the most by any player.

Former Roughneck Kevin Dostie had a hat trick and three assists for the Bandits (3-2) as did Steenhuis. Also scoring for Buffalo were Dan Teat (2g, 3a), Clay Hill (2g), Pat McCready (2g), Cory Bomberry (1g, 4a), Delby Powless (1g, 3a) and Billy Dee Smith (1g).

Starting Buffalo netminder Michael Thompson made 43 saves before being relieved by Ken Montour, who stopped three of the four shots he faced in the final 3:55 of play.

Ryan Avery made his second consecutive start in the Calgary net and made 31 saves before giving way to Alex Coutts who stopped two of three shots he faced.

The Riggers couldn't find their scoring touch in the first half as the Bandits built up a 6-2 lead as Dostie scored twice to lead the Buffalo attack.

The Riggers played better in the second half, but were still outscored 11-7 by the Bandits, who rebounded with a win after suffering a 15-14 setback to the Philadelphia Wings on Jan. 26.

The Roughnecks will look to get back on the winning track next Saturday, Feb. 16 when they travel to Rochester to play the Knighthawks. The Riggers will then face the LumberJax in Portland on Feb. 22 before returning home to play the West Division leading Colorado Mammoth on the afternoon of Feb. 24.

Default Portland Seeks Second Win In Minnesota

PORTLAND, February 9, 2008 - Fresh off scoring a season-high 12 goals, the Portland LumberJax (1-4) travel to Minnesota to meet the East Division leading Swarm (5-0) at 1 p.m. at the Xcel Energy Center on Sunday, February 10.

This is the fourth straight road game for the Jax, who are currently 1-2 on the long trip.

The road swing began on Jan. 26, when the Jax fell 13-6 to the Calgary Roughnecks. Derek Malawsky scored two goals and added two assists in the losing effort.

Feb.2 featured the first of three meetings between Portland and the Edmonton Rush. The Jax scored a season-high five first quarter goals en route to an 11-10 victory. The game featured five ties and four lead changes as Malawsky scored a hat trick and buried the game winner with 2:23 left in the game.

On Feb. 7, Portland fell to the Colorado Mammoth 15-12. The Mammoth remained perfect on the season as six Colorado players scored two goals or more for the balanced scoring attack.

Jax goalie Dallas Eliuk stopped 17 of the 18 shots he faced as the National Lacrosse League ironman became the first player in league history to play in 200 career regular season games. The milestone validates the stellar career of the NLL's all-time saves leader (6,240).

After only putting a Jax career-low two shots on goal against Edmonton, forward Ryan Powell had eight shots on net against Colorado, scoring on four of them. Powell's four goals tied him with fellow forward Peter Morgan for the franchise lead in goals scored (43). He's also the franchise leader in assists (68) and points scored (111).

Powell has also scored at least one point in all 32 regular season games he's appeared in with Portland in addition to tallying an assist in 31 straight regular season games.

On the cusp of a three game home stand that will keep Portland in the Rose City for the remainder of the month, the Jax have one final road game before returning to the friendly confines of the Rose Garden Arena.

The series history between Portland and Minnesota is quite brief. The teams have met only three times, with the Swarm holding a 2-1 edge over the Jax. On 3/17/06, Minnesota won the first ever meeting between the two clubs 14-12 at the Rose Garden.

Not even a month later, Portland sought vengeance in a 13-8 win over Minnesota on 4/15/06 at the Xcel Energy Center.

The Swarm won last year's meeting 11-8 at the Rose Garden in the third battle between the two clubs on 2/2/07.
