Default Titans Victorious In 2008 Season Opener Saturday

Portland, Ore. -- New York Titans Captain Casey Powell was the star of the Titans? 2008 season opener against the Portland LumberJax Saturday night, scoring four goals and leading the Titans to a 14-11 victory.

?It?s a whole new season for the Titans,? Powell said after the thrilling season opening match. ?We?ve got a really talented squad this year with some new players who will add a lot of depth, and the guys who played for the Titans had a whole season to gel. Titans fans are in for some great lacrosse this season.?

Powell set the tone for the night early, scoring the first goal of the game 2:05 minutes into the match. Two minutes later, Titans forward Pat Maddalena assisted the second goal of the night, a light shot in the upper left hand quarter by Brian Tower. Powell found the net again three minutes later.

Mike McLellan and Maddelana added two more unanswered goals, bringing the Titans to 5-0 against the Jax with 2:40 left in the quarter.

Jax forward Derek Malawsky scored the home team?s first goal of the night with 1:53 left in the quarter.

With :13 to go in the first quarter, Powell netted a goal of a rebound.

Just as the teams were preparing to head back to the bench, Titans transition player Jarett Park hit a buzzer beater from the half-field line to finish the Titans? first quarter of their first game of the 2008 season 7-1 against the Jax.

The LumberJax staged a rally in the second quarter, scoring three unanswered goals, two of which took place during a Jax power play, cutting the Titans lead to 7-4.

Titans forward Mike ?The Maestro? McLellan ended the Titans scoring drought, netting the Titans only goal of the second quarter with 3:45 left before the half. The Titans headed into the tunnel with a comfortable 8-4 lead at the half.

Casey Powell started the half off strong, showcasing his trademark acrobatics on the field by diving into the net to score the first goal of the second half off a fast break, bringing the Titans lead to 9-4.

Both teams exchanged goals throughout the third quarter and the Titans entered the fourth quarter with an 11-7 lead.

The contest heated up in the fourth quarter, with the Jax scoring four unanswered power play goals, tying the game at 11-11 with less than 9:00 left in the match.

Pat Maddalena put the Titans back in the lead with a quick shot in the upper right hand corner with 7:00 left in regulation.

With 1:30 to go, McLellan quick-sticked the game winning goal into the net off an assist by Titans first pick in the NLL draft Jordan Hall.

With :02 left in the game, Titans goalie Matt Vinc scored an empty net goal, capping off the Titans win at 14-11. Vinc had 36 saves on 47 shots for the night.

Casey Powell was the Titans leader in points, with eight on the night.

Dan Dawson was the leader in points for the LumberJax and for the game with four goals and five assists.

The Titans play three games on the road before opening at home when they play the San Jose Stealth on January 31st at 7:30pm at Madison Square Garden.

Default Zywicki, Wiles lead Stealth to 13-12 Win Over Calgary in Opener

CALGARY - The opening-day jitters lasted about 30 minutes, and then it was back to business for the San Jose Stealth.

The Stealth, thanks to the offensive heroics of Jeff Zywicki and Luke Wiles, put the first National Lacrosse League W on the books Saturday night, defeating the Calgary Roughnecks 13-12 in overtime in front of a crowd of 12,022 at the Pengrowth Saddledome.

Wiles scored 47 seconds into the extra frame, his fourth goal of the game, capping a wild night which saw a total of 101 shots on net, 48 by the Stealth. Zywicki, meanwhile, netted five goals and four assists in the win.

Calgary's 2008 record fell to 0-2.

The two teams will meet again two Fridays from now in the Stealth home opener at the HP Pavilion.

The game began in a promising vein, with both starting goaltenders - Anthony Cosmo for San Jose and Steve Dietrich - equal to whatever the opposing team had to throw at them. The first quarter finished up deadlocked at 2-2, with Cosmo making 11 saves.

Fortunes changed dramatically in the second quarter, as a porous Stealth defense allowed Roughnecks to roam freely in the offensive zone.

The Roughnecks scored four straight to take a 6-2 lead, before Zywicki - the Stealth's top scorer in 2007 - skirted one under Dietrich on a shorthanded effort, his second goal of the night.

By the time the first half had ended, Calgary had fired 36 shots at the San Jose net, while ringing a couple off the goalpost and having another couple called off because of crease violations. The half ended 8-3 in Calgary favor.

The second half began in San Jose's favor, as Zywicki and Wiles did what they could to turn the team's luck around. At the 1:53 mark, Zywicki tucked a cheeky one past Dietrich from behind the net. Less than a minute later, Wiles scored, dropping the deficit to 8-5.

Each time the Stealth would inch closer, the Roughnecks would get one back and snuff out their momentum. Until the fourth quarter, that is.

The Stealth had a great opportunity to close the gap when Calgary's Andrew McBride received a five-minute major penalty for elbowing, and they took advantage. Peter Veltman and Wiles scored, tying the game at 10-10 at 5:48 of the fourth quarter.

Calgary sharpshooter Lewis Ratcliff led the way with three goals and six assists.

Default Roughnecks lose OT heart-breaker to Stealth

CALGARY, AB - Despite a valiant effort while supporting a great cause, the Calgary Roughnecks lost 13-12 in overtime to the San Jose Stealth Saturday night.

Wearing pink jerseys during their National Lacrosse League home opener to show their support for breast cancer awareness, the Roughnecks built up an 8-3 halftime lead over the San Jose Stealth in front of 12,022 appreciative fans at the Pengrowth Saddledome.

The Stealth then rallied and held a 12-10 advantage late in the fourth quarter before Lewis Ratcliff and Curt Malawsky scored goals for Calgary in the game's final minute to tie the contest and send it into overtime.

In the extra session, the Riggers had the first opportunity to score, but San Jose goalie Anthony Cosmo turned aside Ratcliffe's low, hard shot. After calling a timeout, the Stealth went on the attack and were rewarded when Luke Wiles fired a low shot past Calgary netminder Steve Dietrich at the 47 second mark of OT.

Ratcliff finished the game with three goals and six assists for the Roughnecks (0-2), Malawsky scored twice and set up two others, Nolan Heavenor had a three-point (2g, 1a) night, while Kerry Hall also scored twice. Scott Ranger scored once and had four helpers, while Kaleb Toth and Jeff Shattler each had a goal and an assist.

Jeff Zywicki led the way for the Stealth (1-0) with five goals and four assists, Wiles finished with four goals and three helpers, while Peter Veltman (2g, 1a), Cam Sedgewick (1g, 4a) and Colin Doyle (1g, 4a) also contributed to the win.

Before the game, the Roughnecks received a bit of bad news when informed that captain Tracey Kelusky was sick and wouldn't play.

Neither team could get much going offensively early on until Zywicki opened the scoring at 8:33 of the first quarter when he snuck a high shot in over the shoulder pad of Dietrich. Just 40 seconds later a low shot by Veltman fooled Dietrich as the Stealth took a 2-0 lead.

Before the end of the first quarter, the Roughnecks scored a pair of power-play goals as Ratcliff set up Ranger and then Malawsky to tie the score at 2-2.

In the second quarter, the Riggers took the lead for the first time when Ratcliff scored during a two-man advantage. Ratcliff showed great poise by picking up his rebound and firing it into the goal as Cosmo fell backwards in his net.

Heavenor and Hall then scored goals 24 seconds apart before Hall counted his second of the contest to put the Roughnecks up 6-2.

Zywicky got the Stealth back on the board when he battled through a hard check by Devan Wray and still somehow managed to lead forward and sneak a shot to the far corner past Dietrich.

On another Calgary power-play advantage, Ratcliff took a pass from Toth while running towards the net. He snapped a heavy shot past Cosmo before colliding with the San Jose goalie while in full flight.

With just 2.3 seconds left in the half and the Roughnecks a man down, Toth fired a shot through traffic that beat Cosmo to put Calgary up 8-3.

At the half, the Roughnecks held a 36-18 advantage on the shot clock and had converted four of seven power-play opportunities while killing off both shorthanded situations they faced.

Just 1:53 into the third, Zywicki completed his hat trick before Wiles scored 42 seconds later to pull the Stealth within three of the Riggers. While Heavenor and Shattler bulged the twine for the Riggers in the third, Zywicki tallied twice more and Wiles scored another as well to pull the Stealth within two goals heading into the final frame.

In the fourth, Calgary defenceman Andrew McBride took a five-minute penalty for elbowing to put the Riggers a man down for an extended period. The Roughnecks killed off the first few minutes of the major and even had a scoring opportunity when Jeff Moleski picked up a loose ball and broke in alone on Cosmo before firing wide.

In the latter stages of the man advantage, Veldmen finished off a nice three-way passing play before Wiles fired a long-range shot past Dietrich to tie the score at 10-10.

Doyle and Sedgwick then scored to give the Stealth a two-goal lead before the Riggers rallied to send the game into overtime where Wiles emerged as the hero for San Jose. The final shots were 53-48 in favour of the Roughnecks.

During the contest, many of the players' game-worn jerseys were sold during a silent auction, while others were auctioned off during a live auction immediately following the game. All Proceeds will be going to the Canadian Breast Cancer Society.

Default New York Powers Past Portland 14-11

With forward Dan Dawson making his highly anticipated debut and the Portland LumberJax wearing the team's first ever third jersey, the Jax (0-1) fell 14-11 to the New York Titans (1-0) in front of 10,893 raucous fans at the Rose Garden Arena Saturday night.

From the beginning, it was all New York. The Titans were up 5-0 behind four power play goals before the Jax even had a chance to blink. Forward Derek Malawsky got the Jax on the board when the nine-year veteran scored with 1:53 left in the first quarter. That goal was made possible by a series of nice passes from Dawson and Ryan Powell.

Trailing 7-1, the Jax began the second quarter with a renewed vigor. Powell scored, then Malawsky, and finally Dawson scored to complete the 3-0 run for the Jax. All three goals were power play goals for the Jax. The Titans would add a late Mike McLellan goal to take an 8-4 lead into the break.

The third quarter featured another 3-0 run for the Jax as Dawson put in back-to-back goals to complete the hat trick. The run culminated with Malawsky's second goal of the game to move the Jax within one. However, New York scored the final three goals of the quarter to take an 11-7 lead into the final period of regulation.

The Jax continued the second half surge by scoring the first four goals of the period to tie the game at 11 with just over eight minutes to play. The deluge of scoring started with Malawsky's third goal of the game. Peter Jacobs then followed with his first National Lacrosse League goal, which was assisted by Dawson and Scott Stewart.

Dawson scored his record setting fourth goal of the game to trim the Titan lead to 11-10. Dawson's four goals and four assists were the most goals scored in a season opener for the Jax and the most overall points (8) in a season opener in team history. Powell continued the excitement as he tied the game at 11 with just over eight minutes left off an assist from Peter Morgan and Jacobs.

The scoring ended there for the Jax, however. New York rattled off the final three goals to complete the 14-11 victory. This was the first time the Jax lost a home opener.

The Titans game against the San Jose Stealth that same night will begin at 7:30pm.

"The Titans have brought a lot of historic firsts to the Garden over the past year," said Titans COO Timothy Kelly. As part of the Mayor's Cup, the Titans will proudly award the Most Valuable Player of the game with the Police Officer Ronald Kloepfer MVP plaque. Kloepfer, along with the Patrolman's Benevolent Association, formed the NYPD lacrosse team in 1997. He passed away on September 11, 2001, but has left a lasting legacy with the NYPD lacrosse squad.

"It is truly an honor to present the inaugural Mayor's Cup FDNY-NYPD Indoor Lacrosse Challenge," said New York City Sports Commissioner Kenneth J. Podziba. "New York's Bravest and Finest put on uniforms every day and place their lives on the line to keep the city's citizens safe. On January 31, they will once again selflessly strap on their pads to benefit two worthy causes -- PBA Widows & Orphans Fund and the FF Thomas R. Elsasser Fund. I wish each department the best of luck as they go toe-to-toe for department bragging rights."

Sponsoring the Mayor's Cup event is the 2011 World Police and Fire Games, which will be held in New York City in 2011. Both teams played a physical game and saw star players sit for lengthy stretches of time in the penalty box. Titans stars Casey Powell and Ryan Boyle, more known for their finesse than their aggressive play sat for a combined 25 minutes in the box. Default Swarm's Nick Patterson and Craig Point Win Weekly NLL Awards

SAINT PAUL/MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The National Lacrosse League (NLL) announced today that goaltender Nick Patterson has been named Defensive Player of the Week and forward Craig Point has been named Rookie of the Week for Week 3 of the NLL season. Minnesota swept the Toronto Rock in a home-and-home series last weekend and are 2-0 for the first time in franchise history. The Swarm won 17-16 in overtime at Air Canada Centre Jan. 11 and 11-4 at Xcel Energy Center Jan. 12.

Patterson, 25 (12/8/82), backstopped the Swarm to both victories last weekend making 41 saves in Friday's overtime win and holding Toronto to three power play goals in 10 chances. He then stopped 40 of 44 shots faced in Saturday's victory holding the Rock to their lowest goal total in franchise history. The four goals scored by Toronto was one goal shy of tying the NLL record for fewest goals allowed in a regular season game set in 1992 when Detroit beat Pittsburgh 12-3. Patterson leads the NLL with a 9.88 goals against average (GAA) and ranks second with a .802 save percentage.

Point, 21 (1/19/86), led the Swarm in scoring with eight points (2-6=8), collected eight loose balls and won 5 of 10 face-offs in his first career NLL contest Friday and added two points (1-1=2) and two loose balls Saturday. He recorded six power play points (1-5=6) over the weekend.

The Weekly Player Awards are determined by a vote of the General Managers and Head Coaches of the league's 12 member clubs.

Minnesota next game is Jan. 26 at the Rochester Knighthawks and the Swarm's next home game is Feb. 8 against the New York Titans. Swarm single game tickets are on sale now and range from $12 to $32 per game. Season ticket packages start at $80 and lower level 4-game plans start at $44. Default Rock visits Rush

Edmonton, AB---Saturday's game marks the first of two meetings between the Canadian rivals and the fourth overall clash since the Rush joined the National Lacrosse League in 2006.

The teams will meet again on March 21 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.

The Rush enter the game with an 0-1 record after opening the 2008 NLL season with a 14-11 loss to the Colorado Mammoth at the Pepsi Center in Denver last Friday. Three players had standout games for the Rush as Mike Accursi, Ben Prepchuk, and A.J. Shannon all tallied five points. Shannon had a first-half hat trick to pace the attack as the Rush rallied to come back from a 7-3 deficit. Accursi, playing in his first game with the Rush since an off-season trade from Rochester, scored on the power play and chipped in four assists. Prepchuk, playing against his former club for the first time since a trade during the summer, scored a pair of goals in the fourth quarter and added three helpers.

All of the Rush's newcomers factored into the scoring against Colorado. Kyle Goundrey, a free-agent pick up from Calgary, had a goal and an assist along with four loose balls, Mike Grimes and Chris Seller each picked up a point and Ian Hawksbee supplied two assists. Curtis Palidwor, the Rush's Team MVP a year ago, managed 41 saves.

Toronto's season is off to a slow start as they dropped both games in a home-and-home weekend series against the Minnesota Swarm. Josh Sanderson had a sock trick with six goals and Sherwood Park native Blaine Manning led the way with three goals and five assists but the Rock dropped their home opener when Ryan Cousins scored 1:27 into overtime giving the Swarm a 17-16 victory. One night later in St. Paul, the Rock had one of their worst offensive outputs in franchise history as they fell 11-4.

Thanks to a 50-save performance from Curtis Palidwor, the Rush won the only match up between Edmonton and Toronto last season. Jimmy Quinlan notched a hat trick while Randy Daly, Ryan O'Connor and Jamey Bowen all scored twice in the Rush's 12-9 win. The Rock had a balanced attack with Josh Sanderson, Ryan Benesch and Chad Thompson all potted two goals while Aaron Wilson had a goal and four assists.

That result gave the Rush their first victory over the five-time NLL champions following two disappointing losses in their inaugural season. Josh Sanderson had a career-best outing as he carved out 11 points on three goals and eight assists in the Rock's lopsided 14-8 win. The Rock's top guns were all firing as Blaine Manning and Colin Doyle both collected 10 points - Manning on a goal and nine assists and Doyle with three goals and seven helpers. Kevin Howard led the Rush with three goals.

A little more than two weeks later, the Rush dropped a 13-11 decision to the Rock in Edmonton despite two goals apiece from Jamey Bowen, Darren Hillier and Ted Jenner. The Rush led the game 11-10 with less than five minutes to go but Aaron Wilson notched his fourth goal of the night to level the score and pace the Toronto resurgence. Josh Sanderson had a goal and seven assists for the Rock while Colin Doyle picked up two goals and five assists.

Default 1-0 Titans Ready for Buffalo Saturday

New York, NY - After winning their first game of the 2008 season on the road against the Portland LumberJax last weekend, the New York Titans are prepared to battle their upstate rivals the Buffalo Bandits on Saturday, January 19 at 7:30pm.

The Titans went 0-2 against the Bandits last season, with a loss on the road and at home, and will be looking to avenge those losses in HSBC Arena Saturday night.

"Our guys are driven to win the next game. Last week was a good start but this week we simply have to play our best," said Titans head coach Adam Mueller. "Buffalo has been one of the top tier teams in the NLL for a few years now. They have a very potent offense and a physical, athletic defense that thrives on making teams make decision under pressure. I think we should be a bit more familiar with their style this season but how we handle, adjust and react will determine our success."

Entering the match against Buffalo Saturday, Titans Captain Casey Powell is in the top 20 in scoring in the NLL after only one game. He scored four goals and notched three assists in the Titans 14-11 victory against the Jax on January 12th.

Titans goalie Matt Vinc is tied for fourth place in NLL Goalie Leaders entering Saturday's game, after having logged an 80% saves percentage in the win against Portland.

Mueller expects his team to enter Saturday's match against Buffalo with the same energy the team had against Portland, when the Titans went up 7-1 in the first quarter.

"Buffalo comes out strong every game, especially at home, so our focus to make them earn every goal they score," Mueller said. "On offense, we need to play smart and try and control the tempo of the game. When Buffalo dictates, they are at their best."

The Bandits enter Saturday's game 1-1 after dropping a game to the Rochester Knighthawks during their Home-and-Home series played this past weekend. Both teams lost their games at home. On Friday, the Knighthawks beat the Bandit 12-9 and on Saturday, the Bandits beat the Knighthawks 14-9.

The Bandits currently have two players in the top ten in scoring - Mark Steenhuis and John Tavares are tied for 6th place with 11 points this season.

After the game against Buffalo on Saturday night, the Titans play one more game on the road against Toronto before opening at home against the San Jose Stealth on January 31st at 7:30pm at Madison Square Garden.

Titans 2008 Season and Group Tickets are now available by calling 888-8TITANS or contact the Titans at tickets@nytitans.com. Season tickets start as low as $75 for all five games at the World's Most Famous Arena. Log onto New York Titans Pro Indoor Lacrosse for information on the Titans 2008 season schedule.

Default Toronto coach suspended following post-game incident

The National Lacrosse League has suspended Toronto Rock head coach Glenn Clark indefinitely, the league announced today. Clark was suspended for his role in an incident that took place following a Rock home game vs. the Minnesota Swarm on January 11 at Air Canada Centre in Toronto.

The Office of the Commissioner conducted an investigation of the incident, which included a hearing with Clark and Commissioner Jim Jennings. Upon review of the matter, the Commissioner found that Clark engaged in an altercation with Minnesota player Sean Pollock at Air Canada Centre following the game, which ended in a 17-16 overtime victory for Minnesota.

Clark is presently in his second season as head coach of the Rock. Prior to coaching, he played nine seasons in the league, from 1998-2006.
