Default Jax Open 2008 Season On Saturday

PORTLAND, January 10, 2008 - After eight long months, the Portland LumberJax finally return to action. To begin the 2008 season, the Jax (0-0) host the New York Titans (0-0) at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 12 at the Rose Garden Arena.

This is the first time the Jax and Titans have ever met. It's also the first opportunity for Ryan and Casey Powell to play against one another in the National Lacrosse League regular season. Both Syracuse alums are known worldwide for their lacrosse skills, so both will be on center stage as they lock sticks. Brothers Patrick and Brodie Merrill will also be playing each other for the first time in the NLL regular season.

The Jax drastically needed an offensive upgrade after scoring a league-low 153 goals last season. To address the issue, GM/Head Coach Derek Keenan brought in seven new forwards who will balance both sides.

Last season's runner-up in the National Lacrosse League point scoring race (107), Dan Dawson, joins the Jax this season after being selected with the first pick in the Dispersal Draft. In his six year career, Dawson has averaged 4.5 points per game. The 107 (47 goals and 60 assists) points he put up last season was tied for the sixth most in NLL history.

Dawson's right-hand man, Derek Malawsky was also acquired by way of the dispersal draft. The nine-year veteran has scored at least 50 points per season in his last eight seasons. More so than has scoring ability, Malawsky is known for his artistry with the stick. His 35 assists last season paced the Sting to the Champion's Cup Final.

Two of the Minnesota Swarm's premier forwards also join the Jax this season after being acquired in separate trades. Spencer Martin (14 goals, 27 assists) was picked up on draft by the Jax. The six-year veteran is listed as a forward, but the British Columbia native will quickly show his defensive tenacity. Scott Stewart (17 goals, 23 assists), who played with the Jax for the first four games of the 2006 season, was also re-acquired after spending last season with the Swarm. Stewart adds additional support on the right side. Derek Lowe also joins the team after putting up impressive numbers in the Western Lacrosse Association.

On the active roster, 12 players return from last season's team. Powell, Merrill, Peter Morgan and goalies Dallas Eliuk and Matt King all return and will enter their third year with the franchise this season. Scott Stapleford and Adam Bysouth are back once again to move the transition game. Last season's big surprise, Matt Holman, returns and will put his four consecutive hat trick streak on the line.

To mix in with a loaded, veteran lineup, Keenan and his coaching staff even brought in four rookies who will compete for time. Forwards Cory Conway and Peter Jacobs will all get valuable NLL experience this season. Highly touted transition player and first round draft pick, Tyler Codron, will instantly step in and see significant playing time this season. Even goalie Joel Weber will see action as the season grows.

On the defensive side, the Jax have added some additional speed and skill to last year's squad. Mike Kilby was a draft day acquisition from the Swarm and Brad MacDonald was selected in the third round of the Dispersal Draft. Richard Morgan, Ray Guze, Ian Crashley, and Team Captain Pat Jones are all back to anchor the back line.

This season is filled with high hopes. After succeeding in 2006 and struggling in 2007, the Jax figure that the third year will be the charm.

Default Rush Predications for 2008

Edmonton, AB----With the Edmonton Rush set to open their season on the road this Saturday against the always-tough Colorado Mammoth, it's the perfect time for a little look-ahead with some predictions for the 2008 season.

Game time 7:00 p.m. at Pepsi Center, Denver Colorado, broadcast live on Shaw Cable, Channel 10.

Most Valuable Player

For the past two seasons, the Rush's top player has been a goaltender. In 2006, crowd favourite Pat Campbell took the honour and last season, Curtis Palidwor stole the show enough times to edge out leading scorer Chris Gill in a close vote.

In '08, however, a shooter will finally get his due and it will be ... Chris Gill. The veteran was terrific in his first season with the Rush setting franchise highs and team records all over the place while also reaching the prestigious 300-goal plateau. One of his most memorable games last season was when the Rush won on the road again in Calgary with Gill achieving the first "sock trick" (six-goal game) in Rush history.

There's no telling whether Gill has another sock trick in him or not for 2008, but it's a good bet that he'll lead the team in scoring for a second straight year. He racked up 62 points last season with a rather limited cast around him and now this season the Rush offence not only has returnees like Dan Stroup and Jimmy Quinlan, it's been bolstered by newcomers Mike Accursi, Kyle Goundrey and Ben Prepchuk. That's bound to mean more goals in general and certainly more production on the power play which bodes well for Gill's point totals.

Top Scorer

Gill is the man here, but he won't be alone among Rush players who have some lofty totals - perhaps even some career years.

Accursi is coming off a banner playoff performance for Rochester last spring and he could certainly turn those post-season numbers into something special for the Rush during the regular season. Stroup had 51 points a year ago and he, like Gill, will benefit from a spread-out offence that will take the heat of one or two top guns.

Having been a second-option too often in Colorado, watch for Prepchuk to approach the numbers he'd put early on with the Mammoth and even back to the glory days with Calgary. He's definitely proven to be a force on the Rexall Place floor while he was with Colorado and now having it as his home floor could yield big things.

And while they won't likely be right at the top of the scoring leaders, the balanced offence will get a good charge out of Randy Daly and A.J. Shannon - two players who had strong showings last season despite long-term injuries.

Top Defenceman

Former captain Andrew Turner took the award in both the previous two seasons, so it will obviously be a new face taking home the hardware this year.

The winner in 2008 will take a big step to the forefront of the Rush roster having been overshadowed for some time by Turner's presence. Coming off his best year, former NLL All-Rookie Team member Rory Glaves will immerge as the Rush's top rearguard. In fact, in very close voting last season, Turner barely squeaked past Glaves, who ended up claiming the very deserving Unsung Hero Award.

Glaves is a steadying influence who doesn't take needless penalties, finishes his checks and will jump into the offensive play when the time is right.

The hole left by Turner's absence won't be nearly as big if Glaves continues to progress. It's quite possible even that Glaves could make this the year a truly breakout season and get himself into the hunt for not only an All-Star Game appearance but also get in the running for the NLL's Top Defenceman Award.

Top Transition Player

This could very well be the most difficult award to hand out consider the cast of characters the Rush have in this area.

Leading off there's last year's winner and new team captain, Chris McElroy, whose game hit a new high in '07 and is bound to get only better in 2008. He's tenacious on defence and has the gifts to lead the charge up the floor. If he finishes a few more times than he did last season, he'll easily eclipse his career high of eight goals.

Then there's a strong newcomer cast led by Ian Hawksbee. All he did a year ago was lead San Jose and finished 10th in the league in loose balls. And also joining up for the Rush this season is Chris Seller who should provide some punch at both ends of the floor.

Unsung Hero Award

This is one of the best honours to receive as it goes to a player who may not lead the team in any particular statistical category but he contributes on a regular - and often timely - basis.

He will also likely be someone who dishes out a hit, maybe drops the gloves a time or two, makes a big play coming back in his own end, and even provide a glimmer of leadership.

Glaves took the award last season for being a rock-steady defenceman. In 2008, there are several strong candidates but the early-season nod will go to Randy Daly.

Daly struck for a pair of game-winning goals in 2007, including the deciding marker in the biggest victory in franchise history when he found the back of the net in the dying seconds against Philadelphia for the club's first home-floor win. If Daly can stay healthy, he's a valuable second-tier contributor on offence. And if anyone remembers the elbow-drop he laid out an opponent with last season, it's clear he doesn't back away from the rough going.

Community Service Award

The Rush have had to work hard to gain their place as the No. 3 pro sports team in town and in large part that effort has come from getting out into the community.

Many players have taken the time to attend charity events of all shapes and sizes and numerous players have spent hours teaching the skills of the game they love to youngsters in school.

Last year the award was shared by Jimmy Quinlan and the now-retired Jamey Bowen - both local products who taught lacrosse at the St. Francis Xavier Academy and also spent many hours supporting local charities.

This award may not come with the glitz that MVP or Top Scorer does but it's hard not to salute someone who gives the most they can of themselves.

The Rush will return home on Saturday, January 19 for their Season Home Opener in Rexall Place at 7:30 p.m. against the Toronto Rock. Continuing with providing fans with an exciting atmosphere, the half-time entertainment is Tupelo Honey. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster , 451-8000.

Default Rock unable to finish the Swarm in OT

Ray Bala, Toronto - The Rock's first home game had electricity in the air and the game was equally charged. Coming into the game having won their first on the road in Chicago last weekend, the Rock were looking to make it a second win at home. In what would prove to be a high scoring, and physical affair that saw a combined 137 penalty minutes and three game misconducts, the Swarm spoiled Toronto's home opener in a close game and overtime win 17-16.

The Rock quickly dominated early in the game and their attacks came furiously. The Rock took the lead with two goals from Aaron Wilson and Ryan Benesch. Minnesota's Ryan Sharp would put the Swarm on the board with an individual effort midway through the first but Blaine Manning's fifth goal of the season would make it a two goal lead finishing the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the Swarm's offense wake up to rattle off the first three goals of the quarter, two each from Andy Secore and Ryan Ward. The Rock would battle through the quarter with Minnesota scoring four of their own goals and taking advantage of two power play opportunities. The score was 7-7 heading into halftime.

After the break, Toronto immediately looked to assert itself on offense. After trading goals with Minnesota early in the quarter, the Rock took the lead on goals by Benesch, Josh Sanderson and the newly acquired Cam Woods who scored on a transition play to give Toronto a 12-9 midway through the third. The Toronto defense put a foot on the Swarm offense limiting them to only 10 shots on goal. Blaine Manning added to the lead on his third goal of the night in the final ten seconds of the stanza making the final after three quarters 13-10.

The fourth would turn into a dogfight between the two teams. The Swarm stormed back scoring two quick goals in the first minute cutting the Toronto lead to one. With the game becoming intense early in the period, Rock defender Cam Woods would be given a game misconduct at the 2:13 mark for fighting with Minnesota's Travis Hill. Woods' ejection seemed to ignite the 13,317 fans in the hometown crowd as well as Sanderson who would score the next three Toronto goals giving the Rock a 16-14 lead with under three minutes to play. Toronto would incur two penalties at both the 11:17 and 12:24 marks giving the Swarm their window. Minnesota took the game right to the Rock defenders and despite a valiant effort and stellar play from goal keeper Bob Watson, the Swarm would go on to tie the game with 34 seconds left in the game forcing overtime.

The Rock would win the opening face off in the extra period but were unable to convert on their opportunity in the Minnesota end. The Swarm would charge back into the Toronto area where Watson would stop three straight shots on goal before Ryan Cousins put in the game winner at the 1:27 mark.

The Rock offense was led by Blaine Manning's eight points (3 goals, 5 assists) followed by the game leading goal scorer Josh Sanderson's 7 points on 6 goals and 1 assist. Eleven of the Rock's players would record a point tonight, including rookie Jay Winder who scored his first NLL goal of the season.

Despite the loss, Toronto goalie Bob Watson had an excellent game stopping 40 of the 57 shots he faced, most in heavy traffic.

The Swarm were led in scoring by Craig Point who recorded 8 points on 2 goals and 6 assists followed by Ryan Ward who had 7 on 5 goals and 2 assist. Minnesota goalkeeper Nick Patterson would go on to record the win.

The Rock (1-1) will be looking for a little revenge tomorrow night as they face the Swarm once again in Minnesota at 8:00 p.m. EST.

Default Wings Defeat Shamrox 19-11 In Home Opener

PHILADELPHIA - The Wings started the season with a decisive 19-11 win against Chicago Saturday at the Wachovia Center in front of 11,974 fans. The game was the first of the season and the first for new coach Dave Huntley. Rookie Merrick Thomson led the way with four goals and two assists. Athan Iannucci scored five goals and an assist and Jake Bergey added four goals and an assist. The Wings outshot the Shamrox, 71-48.

"It was a really good start," said Wings' Head Coach Dave Huntley. "I thought we played with great energy and great athleticism. It was great to see all the young players in their first game and nice to see a veteran like Bergey have a great night. It was a great team effort everywhere." A penalty in the first minute of the new season left the Wings short handed, but they were able to kill off the Chicago power play and take over for the remainder of the quarter. Philadelphia failed to convert on a five-on-three man advantage, but pushed on to score the only three goals of the quarter. Jason Crosbie netted his first for the Wings, Merrick Thompson tallied his first NLL goal, and Athan Iannucci also scored. Goalie Rob Blasdell stopped all eight Chicago shots and added an assist.

Chicago finally got into the game in the second quarter with two quick goals by Jason Clark and Bill McGlone. Josh Wasson-McQuigge tied the game at three midway through the quarter, but the Wings regained the lead just 20 seconds later on a goal by Jake Bergey. Philadelphia added three unanswered goals (Thenhhaus, Iannucci, Rooney) before the Shamrox scored a late-half goal on the power play from Mat Giles. Derek Collins replaced Brandon Miller in goal for Chicago after the Wings' seventh goal. Philadelphia led, 7-4, at halftime.

Peter Jacobs stole the ball and scored to start off the third quarter. Chicago answered on the power play (Calloum Crawford), but the Wings struck just five seconds later on Thomson's second tally of the game. The Shamrox dominated for the middle of the quarter with goals by Chris Panos and Crawford, to draw within two. Thomson completed the hat trick at the end of the quarter to give Philadelphia a three-goal lead going into the fourth quarter.

It took the Wings just 26 seconds to score in the fourth quarter (Bergey). Lindsay Plunkett got the goal back for Chicago, but Bergey responded by completing the hat trick less than a minute later. The Wings didn't give up control, putting the game out of reach with four more goals. Thomson netted his fourth, Iannucci completed the hat trick and scored his fourth, and Rooney scored his second of the game. Plunkett broke up the scoring streak with his second of the quarter. The Wings didn't let up, with additional goals from Taylor Wray and Iannucci. Kevin Fines and McGlone contributed with two more for Chicago, but Bergey had the last say to make it a 19-11 final.

Athan Iannucci (5G,1A) and Merrick Thomson (4G,2A) led the Wings in scoring with six points each. Six other players scored goals for Philadelphia, including Brenden Thenhaus (1G,1A), Jamie Rooney (2G,3A), Jason Crosbie (1G,6A) , Jake Bergey (4G,1A), Peter Jacobs (1G) and Taylor Wray (1G). Goaltender Rob Blasdell made 37 saves.

Lindsay Plunkett led the Shamrox in scoring with four points (2G,2A). Seven other players scored for Chicago, including Jason Clark (1G), Josh Wasson-McQuigge (1G,3A), Mat Giles (1G,2A), Bill McGlone )2G), Kevin Fines (1G,1A), Callum Crawford (2G,2A), and Chris Panos (1G). Goaltender Brandon Miller had 45 saves on 59 shots and Derek Collins had 7 saves on the night.

Default Bandits Defeat Knigthawks, Snap 16-Game Winning Streak

(Rochester, NY)... The Knighthawks dropped their home opener 14-9 tonight to their I-90 rivals the Buffalo Bandits at the Blue Cross Arena, ending their franchise-record 16-game winning streak. The loss spoiled the Knighthawks' home opener, which began with the raising of the 2007 National Lacrosse League championship and the displaying of the Champion's Cup.

Despite both Shawn Williams and John Grant tallying seven points for the Knighthawks, it was the Bandits' Roger Vyse's four goals and one assist that ended Rochester's four-game winning streak against Buffalo.

The Bandits (1-1) trailed 8-5 midway through the third but two short-handed goals allowed the Bandits to capture momentum and propel them to finish off their first win of the season with a 9-1 run.

The Knighthawks (1-1) started the game with a 3-0 lead only to lose it to four unanswered goals by Buffalo. Rochester battled back with three unanswered goals of its own to take a 6-4 halftime lead.

Rochester extended their lead to 7-4 with a Matt Lyons goal early in the third. However, Vyse took over the game with three goals and an assist in the games last 28 minutes.

Grant finished the game with three goals and four assists. While Williams notched goal and dished out six assists. Pat O'Toole made 24 saves in the loss. Mike Thompson denied 29 shots for the victory.

Rochester travels to Philadelphia to battle the Wings on Friday, January 18th at the Wachovia Center at 8:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WYSL1040.com and B2 Networks.

Rochester returns home on Saturday, January 26th to begin a four-game homestand. The Knighthawks host the Minnesota Swarm at 8:05 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on WYSL 1040-AM and wysl1040.com. The game will also be televised tape-delayed on Time Warner SportsNet (Channel 26).

Default Toronto Rock fall to the Swarm on the road

John Nevins, Minnesota - Friday's round one between the Toronto Rock and the Minnesota Swarm at the Air Canada Centre was a wide open and nasty affair, but round two between the teams on Saturday night at the Xcel Energy Center quickly settled into a defensive struggle with little of the drama and animosity displayed the night before. The end result however, was the same, with the Swarm defeating the Rock, this time 11-4, behind the stellar goaltending of Nick Patterson.

Similar to Friday night's game, this tussle got off to a tentative offensive start before Andy Secore opened the scoring with a wrap-around goal from behind the net, surprising Toronto goaltender Mike Poulin. Sean Pollock followed with a second Minnesota goal, before Rock captain Jim Veltman gave his teammates something to rally around on a spectacular individual effort. Veltman intercepted a Swarm pass at half court, then flipped the ball to himself over a Swarm defender's head, before breaking in alone and dazzling Minnesota's Nick Patterson with several sharp moves, scoring to make the score 2-1.

In the second quarter, the Rock faced a surging Swarm offense that potted two goals by Ryan Ward along with Sean Pollock's second of the game, staking Minnesota to a commanding 5-1 lead. The Rock returned the offensive pressure only to be repeatedly stymied by Patterson. Team spirits were raised on a late power play goal by Blaine Manning his 7th of the young season, before that momentum was stopped following a Minnesota power play goal by Dean Hill. The second half ended with the Swarm leading 6-2.

The Rock looked to have a strong second half and get themselves back into the game, but fell victim to an early power play goal by Minnesota rookie Craig Point, which extended the Minnesota lead to five. The Rock gamely rallied on a second breakaway goal by Jim Veltman and a hard earned tally by sophomore Ryan Benesch to bring them within reach of the Swarm at 7-4.

Once again the Rock momentum was short lived as Minnesota's Ryan Ward scored on an outside shot that marked the end of the night for Rock goalie Mike Poulin. Bob Watson came into the game in an effort to steady the Rock, but was greeted with another Swarm goal, this one by Chad Culp to make the score 9-4. The remainder of the game slowed into a defensive grind, which favoured the front running Swarm and left the Rock with a daunting challenge in the fourth quarter.

In the last frame, Minnesota used the shot clock very effectively and scored two more goals by Dean Hill and Ryan Sharp to end the game at 11-4.

In a losing effort, the Rock were led on both ends of the floor by captain Jim Veltman who scored twice and gathered 8 loose balls.

Toronto (1-2), will look to break their two game losing streak and get their offense back on track in Edmonton against the Rush next Saturday night at 9:30 p.m. EST.

Default Mammoth 2-0 after defeating Rush

DENVER - Dan Carey and Gavin Prout paced a torrid offensive attack and Jason Wulder reached a major milestone as the Colorado Mammoth outgunned the Edmonton Rush on Saturday night.

Carey led the team with three goals while Prout recorded game-highs with six assists and seven points to lead the Mammoth to a 14-11 victory before 17,520 fans at Pepsi Center.

Mammoth forward Jordan Cornfield broke a 7-7 tie early in the third quarter with his first goal of the season. Wulder had an assist on the goal - his second of the game - to become just the 20th player in league history to tally 500 points.

Carey followed with his third goal of the game, pushing the Mammoth advantage to 9-7, but Kyle Goundrey answered to pull the Rush within one heading into the fourth quarter.

Prout scored his first goal of the season early in the fourth to give the Mammoth a 10-8 lead, but former Colorado forward Ben Prepchuk cut the lead back down to one with a goal less than a minute later.

The Mammoth finally pulled away, scoring four of the game's final six goals - including an empty-net tally by Josh Sims - to win for the second time in as many games this season.

"It was a battle all the way," Mammoth coach Bob McMahon said. "Edmonton never allowed us to pull away, but our guys kept the pressure on."

Mammoth goaltender Gee Nash recorded his second victory of the season, stopping 31 of 42 shots. Curtis Palidwor took the loss in net for the Rush, making 41 saves and allowing 13 goals.

Ten different shooters scored for the Mammoth, including veteran defenseman Pat Coyle, who scored for just the fifth time in 47 games since joining the Mammoth.

A.J. Shannon led the Rush with three goals and shared the team-high of five points with Prepchuk and Mike Accursi.

The Mammoth came out hot in the second quarter, scoring four consecutive goals to build a 7-3 lead. The run was capped with a goal by Jed Prossner, who was making his Mammoth debut. The Rush responded with its own four-goal run, battling back before halftime to tie the game at 7-7.

The Mammoth took a 2-0 lead early on goals by Brian Langtry and Nenad Gajic, but the Rush answered with three consecutive scores. Carey then converted a pass from Prout to even the score at 3-3 heading into the second quarter.
