BURNABY, BC - Co-Head Coaches Brent Hoskins & Jeff Cathrea have announced the addition of 10 players to Simon Fraser's roster for 2008. Entering their fourth season at the helm of the Clan, Hoskins & Cathrea continue to build one of the most talented young rosters in the MCLA. 10 freshmen will join a returning class that features 10 sophomores and 6 juniors.
Incoming freshman Nick Bertoia (Coquitlam, BC / Centennial Secondary), Curt Brown (Lantzville, BC / Dover Bay Secondary), Nathan Clare (Ladner, BC / Vancouver College), Ben Davies (New Westminster, BC / New Westminster Secondary), Matt Miyashita (Richmond, BC / Hugh Boyd Secondary), Alex Petz (St. Albert, AB / Bellerose Composite), James Poelzer (New Westminster, BC / New Westminster Secondary), Bryan Scott (Guelph, ON / John F. Ross), Dean Stewart (Duncan, BC / Claremont Secondary), and Chris Tessarolo (New Westminster, BC / New Westminster Secondary) will play at Terry Fox Field a top the Burnaby Mountain campus in 2008.
"This freshman class combined with a very strong returning core (which does not contain one senior) is destined to be an integral component to the success of our program for years to come," said Hoskins. "We feel that this young group possesses a lot of heart, character and skill, all of which are key ingredients to a championship team."
"We've brought in a very athletic group that will add depth to our roster," added Cathrea. "All of these guys are very talented and they will create a lot of competition for spots heading into our season."
Bertoia (5'9", 175 lbs.) a product of Coquitlam, BC, won a First Nations Trophy (Canadian National U19 Field Lacrosse Championship) in 2006 as a midfielder on the BC Selects U19 Provincial team. He also had a 44 point summer box lacrosse campaign (21g, 23a) in 25 games for the Coquitlam Jr. B Adanacs in 2007.
Brown (6', 205 lbs.) from Lantzville, BC, was a starting long pole for the BC Selects U19 Provincial Team in 2007. He was also one of 60 players to receive an invitation to Canada's U19 National Team Try-outs for next summer's U19 World Championships. Brown plays Int. A box lacrosse for the Nanaimo Timbermen.
Clare (6'2", 180 lbs.) was a starter at long stick midfield for the BC Selects U19 Provincial Team in 2007. A native of Ladner, BC, he also received an invitation to Canada's U19 National Team Try-outs. Clare plays box lacrosse for the Delta Jr. B Islanders where he finished second in West Coast Junior Lacrosse League scoring with 85 points (37g, 48a) in 22 games.
Davies (6'4", 210lbs.) at midfield, transfers to Simon Fraser from the University of Calgary, where he was recruited as a quarterback for the Dinos. A product of New Westminster, BC, he will add speed and athleticism to the Clan roster.
Miyashita (6', 185 lbs.) will bring experience and versatility to the Clan midfield. A Richmond, BC, product currently suits up in box lacrosse for the powerhouse Burnaby Jr. A Lakers and was also invited to Canada's U19 National Team Try-outs.
Petz (5'10", 170 lbs.) a product of St. Albert, Alberta has won two provincial field lacrosse championships as a member of the Alberta Attack. He also currently plays Jr. B Tier I box lacrosse in Alberta and will add depth for the Clan at attack.
Poelzer (6', 190" lbs.) a native of New Westminster, BC, currently plays box lacrosse for the New Westminster Jr. A Salmonbellies where he turned in a 12 point season (5g, 7a) in 20 games as a defensive/transition player. He also played midfield and long pole for Coach Cathrea in Highschool.
Scott (5'6", 165 lbs.) comes to Simon Fraser from Guelph, Ontario. His box lacrosse experience and work ethic will add depth to the Clan midfield.
Stewart (5'11", 180 lbs.) a product of Duncan, BC, plays box lacrosse for the Nanaimo Jr. A Timbermen where he turned in an impressive 21 point season (8g, 13a) in 19 games. He is also a three-time starting goaltender for the BC U19 Provincial Team, leading the Selects to National Championships in 2005 & 2006.
Tessarolo (5'10", 165 lbs.) led SFU's elite development team, the Burnaby Mountain Selects, in scoring as a high school senior in 2006-2007. The New Westminster, BC product will look to have an immediate impact at attack on Simon Fraser's high powered offence.
Hoskins & Cathrea have also announced that four additional recruits will be sitting out the spring 2008 season. Ravi Neelakantan (Ottawa, ON / St. Peter's Catholic), Ian Paone (Victoria, BC / Claremont Secondary), Alex Turner (Kamloops, BC / Valleyview Secondary), and Brian Tyacke (New Westminster, BC / New Westminster Secondary) will redshirt their first season and join the Clan roster in 2009. All four players will have four years of eligibility remaining.
Simon Fraser University men's lacrosse is entering its 12th season and competes in the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA). During the 2008 season, Co-Head Coaches Brent Hoskins & Jeff Cathrea (4th season) look to lead the Clan into the Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League (PNCLL) Final Four Conference Championships for the 11th time in team history. The team has captured 6 Conference Titles (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2003) and has earned 7 National Championship appearances, placing 2nd in 1999.
