During the first part of this analysis, league scoring and rule changes were discussed. In this segment, the effect of penalty calling and the 2-point arc will be the main topic of discussion. These two aspects greatly influence how the game flows and how the game is played.
Arguably, no rule change or custom game aspect has had more effect on the league than the two point arc. As mentioned in Part I, the league decided to move the 2-point arc back last season. In 2004, 65 2-point goals were scored league-wide, with an average of 10.8 per team. The next season saw a dramatic drop off from the year before with just 45 2-pointers scored. This averaged out to just 7.5 2-pointers per team all season. In 2006, there was a spike in the numbers due to the increased number of teams. It also seemed as if teams were having a more effective time scoring the long ball. With 113 bombs being launched in the 2006 season, teams would average 11.3 in the season. In 2007, the league decided that moving back the arc a yard would make it a more skillful shot and would make teams focus on the more of a traditional style of offense with a bonus option. If that was what the league was looking for when they moved them back, then they got their wish. 65 2-point goals would be scored in 2007 which gives a per team average of 6.5.
