Default Riptide Select Eight Players In 2008 Supplemental Draft

CARSON, CALIFORNIA - Wednesday, December 5, 2007 - The Los Angeles Riptide of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) selected eight players - four attackmen and four midfielders - in the 2008 Major League Lacrosse Supplemental Draft via a league wide conference call on Wednesday, the team announced today.

"We are very pleased with the results of the Supplemental Draft," said Riptide General Manager G.W. Mix. "The staff is very confident this group includes some very talented players who will help make our training camp extremely competitive."

With eight picks spread throughout the seven rounds the Riptide started by selecting Garett Rosecrans with the ninth overall selection in the first-round. Rosecrans, a graduate of Butler University in 2001, is a 6'3" 210 pound midfielder.

Then, with the first of its two second-round picks, the team selected attackman Mike McLellan (15th overall), a 2006 graduate from Mercyhurst College. In two seasons at Mercyhurst, the Ontario, Canada native scored at least one goal in every game played. He currently ranks third in career goals scored (90), first in points per game (4.11) and is tied for fifth in all-time career points (90 goals 21 assists).

Following the selection of McLellan the team chose another attackman, Sean Greenhalgh (Cornell 2005) with the 19th overall selection. Greenhalgh, a former teammate of Riptide defenseman Mitch Belisle, is second in career goals scored (136) and fourth in career points (169) at Cornell. A former player with the Philadelphia Wings (NLL), he led the team in goals (31) during his rookie campaign, and was given the 2006 NLL Sportsman Award.

Garrett Wilson, a 2007 graduate of Georgetown University, was the team's choice in the third-round (29th overall), adding to the Riptide's depth at midfield. Wilson who was a Tri-Captain of the 2007 Hoya squad, helped lead the team to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament, and was named as a Scholar All-American by the USILA.

In round four (39th overall), the Riptide picked midfielder Judd Lattimore (North Carolina 2001). Currently an assistant coach at his alma mater under his former head coach John Haus, Lattimore was a 2000 pre-season All-American selection by Inside Lacrosse Magazine.

In the fifth-round (49th overall), the Riptide selected midfielder Jason Rostan (Hampden-Sydney 2003). Rostan is currently an assistant coach at Hampden-Sydney under his father Ray Rostan. While in college, Jason garnered USILA All-America honors twice, receiving first team accolades in 2002 and second team honors in 2003. In 2002 he was named All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference player of the year and received an invite to tryout for Team USA in 2005.

With the 59th overall selection in the sixth-round the Riptide chose attackman David Madeira (Brown 2007). A former college teammate of current Riptide players Alex Buckley and Chazz Woodson, Madeira led Brown in goals scored during his junior campaign with 21 goals, and again senior campaign with 24 goals.

Dan Bauers (Loyola 2007) was selected in the seventh round (69th overall). In 2007 as a senior attackman, Bauers led the Greyhounds with 29 goals scored.

Default Major League Lacrosse Completes 2008 Supplemental Draft

Boston, Mass. (December 6, 2007) - Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced the results of the 2008 Supplemental Draft which was held on Wednesday, December 5th at 1:00 PM ET. The draft, which consisted of seven rounds, lasted until approximately 2:00 PM ET.

The San Francisco Dragons and Washington Bayhawks held the most picks, with nine (9) selections each.

Defenseman Robert Smith, a 2007 graduate of the University of Delaware, was the selected by the Chicago Machine with the first overall pick. In 2007, Smith collected 52 groundballs in his final season with the Fightin' Blue Hens. Michael Howley, a 2003 graduate of Maryland, was selected by the San Francisco Dragons with the second pick. Howley, a veteran MLL defenseman, has spent time with the Baltimore Bayhawks, Rochester Rattlers, and Long Island Lizards. Defenseman John Glatzel, who spent three seasons in Rochester and one in Boston, was selected by the New Jersey Pride with the third overall pick.

Rounding out the top five, the Washington Bayhawks had back-to-back selections with the fourth and fifth picks. With the fourth pick, the Bayhawks selected 2007 Towson graduate Matt Eckerl. Despite missing several games his senior season due to injury, Eckerl was 105 of 220 on face-offs in 2007, and is the Tigers' current career leader in ground balls with 307. With the fifth pick, Washington selected MLL veteran Billy Glading. Glading, an excellent two-way midfielder, played in 2005 and 2006 with the Boston Cannons.

Other MLL players of note selected were defensemen Damien Davis, Trey Whitty, and Jamie Hanford. Davis, a 2003 Princeton graduate, began his MLL career with the Long Island Lizards. Davis also played a season with the Philadelphia Barrage before spending the past two seasons in Chicago. Davis was selected in the first round of the Supplemental Draft by the New Jersey Pride, with the tenth pick.

Whitty, a 2003 University of Virginia graduate played in all twelve regular season games and collected 22 groundballs for the San Francisco Dragons in 2006 before being traded to Denver in 2007. He was selected in the fifth round by the Washington Bayhawks with the forty-fourth pick. Hanford, taken by the Long Island Lizards in the sixth round with the fifty-fifth pick, has been in the league since 2001. Hanford, who began his MLL career with the Bridgeport Barrage, has also played in Baltimore, New Jersey, and Boston.

In addition to those veterans, several promising young players were chosen as well, such as attackman Derek Cherney, an All-American player out of Division III Amherst College and the 2007 NESCAC Player of the Year, taken fourteenth by Washington; defenseman Michael Graham, who was a four year starter at Loyola and was drafted by Philadelphia in the 2007 Collegiate Draft, chosen seventeenth by Denver; and goaltender Harry Alford of the University of Maryland, also selected by Denver with the sixty-seventh pick. One of the nation's top college goaltenders, Alford missed most of his senior season due to injury. Selected by the Chicago Machine in the 2007 Collegiate Draft, he played one complete game and made appearances in four others.

Those teams whose rosters were less than thirty (30) players at the conclusion of the Supplemental Draft were then eligible to select additional players to bring their rosters up to thirty. The Chicago Machine made one additional selection, and the Boston Cannons and Long Island Lizards each added an additional two players.

Beginning on Thursday, December 6th at 12:00 PM ET, teams may claim players from the remaining Player Pool to bring their Pre-Season Active Roster count to thirty-five (35) players.

Training Camp for MLL teams begins on April 26th. The 2008 MLL season is set to begin on Saturday, May 17th.

Default 2008 NB ZIP MLL Championship Weekend to be played in Boston

Boston, Mass. (December 11, 2007) - Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced today that the 2008 NB ZIP MLL Championship Weekend will take place at Harvard Stadium in Boston on August 23rd and 24th, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross.

The Semi-Final games will be held at 12:00 PM ET and 3:00 PM ET on Saturday, August 23. The two Semi-Final winners will advance to the NB ZIP MLL Championship Game on Sunday, August 24. The Championship Game will once again air live on ESPN2 at 1:00 PM. ESPN2 is also planning on airing one of the Semi-Final games as well.

Boston last hosted Championship Weekend in 2005 when the event was held at Boston University's Nickerson Field. Harvard Stadium became the new home of the Boston Cannons in 2007. Tickets for both days of NB ZIP MLL Championship Weekend are on sale now with complete weekend packages starting at $50. Discounts are available for groups of 25 or more. Cannons Season Ticket packages for 2008, available for just $130 if purchased before December 15, include all three NB ZIP MLL Championship Weekend games. For more information, contact the Cannons ticket office at (888) 847-9700 or visit Boston Cannons.

"We have had great success hosting league events in Boston over the past few years as New England fans have been so incredibly supportive of Major League Lacrosse. We're proud to provide those fans the opportunity to watch the four best lacrosse teams in the world battle for our league championship" said Gross.

The playoff format will be the same as it has been the past two seasons with winners from the Eastern and Western Conference advancing to NB ZIP MLL Championship Weekend. Two wild card spots are awarded to the two teams with the next best regular season records, regardless of conference. The conference winner with the better record plays the wild card team with the lesser record in one Semi-Final game, with the remaining conference winner and wild card team facing off in the other Semi-Final.

"We're honored to have the league's marquee event back in Boston" said Boston Cannons Founding Owner Matt Dwyer. "Harvard stadium is an ideal venue for fans. We have great tail-gaiting at games and the seats in the stadium place the fans so close to the action, you feel like you're on the field with the players."

In 2007, the Rochester Rattlers, Denver Outlaws, Philadelphia Barrage, and Los Angeles Riptide all advanced to the NB ZIP MLL Championship Weekend at Rochester's PAETEC Park. The Barrage won their third MLL title, defeating the Riptide by a score of 16-13 in the Championship Game. Philadelphia midfielder Matt Striebel was named the game's Bud Light MVP. Striebel tallied five goals and four assists over the course of the weekend. It was Philadelphia's second title as many years as the Barrage defeated the Denver Outlaws in the 2006 New Balance Championship Game at the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles.

As an anchor level corporate sponsor of Major League Lacrosse, New Balance is the "Official Footwear and Sideline Apparel of Major League Lacrosse." The New Balance logo also appears on the Boston Cannons team uniform. The Warrior Burn lacrosse shoe by New Balance debuted in February 2004. Designed and tested by members of the Warrior Lacrosse Players Club Team, the Burn is the world's first lacrosse shoe developed by the world's best players.

NB ZIP was launched in August of 2006 and is the company's patented responsive cushioning technology, supported by strategically located shock-absorbing struts. NB ZIP debuted with the 8505 running shoe and the 8515 training shoe. NB ZIP became the presenting sponsor of Major League Lacrosse Championship Weekend in 2007.

Default Washington Bayhawks Name Hiller General Manager

Washington, DC (Dec 12, 2007) - The Washington Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse announced today that Scott Hiller will become general manager of the team and relinquish his head coaching duties. A new head coach will be announced by the end of the year.

"I have greatly enjoyed my time as a head coach in Major League Lacrosse but the time has come to move on from the sideline," said Hiller. "The GM position will allow me to focus much more on player personnel and player development."

Hiller leaves as the all-time leader in MLL regular season coaching wins with 41. He spent his first four seasons as head coach in Boston and earned the MLL Warrior Coach of the Year honors in both 2005 and 2002. He is still the only two-time winner of the award and he led the Cannons to the playoffs all four years. He took over the reins with the Bayhawks in time for the 2006 season and went 9-15 in two seasons.

"Scott has built a young and talented team," said Bayhawks Co-Owner and President Jeffrey Harvey. "As GM he will continue to transform the Bayhawks into a championship-contending team."

Hiller is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts and was a four-time All-American selection for the Minutemen and played on the 1994 United States World Team. He is licensed to practice law in Massachusetts and Illinois and is currently an Associate with Bollinger, Ruberry and Garvey in Chicago, Illinois. Hiller received his Bachelor's Degree from Massachusetts along with a JD from Suffolk University.

The Bayhawks have begun a nationwide search and will announce a new head coach within the next two weeks.

Default Washington Bayhawks Name Jarred Testa Head Coach

Washington, DC (Dec 18, 2007) - The Washington Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse announced today that Jarred Testa has been named head coach, according to Bayhawks GM Scott Hiller.

"After a national search we just felt Jarred possesses all of the outstanding qualifications you would look for in a head coach," said Hiller. "He is intense, organized, has experience as an MLL player, coached collegiately and was very successful in his only season as an MLL head coach."

In 2006 Testa led the expansion Denver Outlaws to a league-tying best 10-2 regular season record and the Western Conference title. They fell to the Philadelphia Barrage in the championship game. In 2006 the Outlaws boasted the league's third-ranked defense and top-ranked offense, scoring 197 goals during the 2006 season and outscoring opponents by an average of six goals per game.

Testa played three seasons in Major League Lacrosse. In 2001 and 2002 he played for the Baltimore Bayhawks and helped the Bayhawks to the 2002 title. He took the 2003 season off but returned in 2004 to play for the Long Island Lizards. He finished his MLL career with 30 goals in 31 games.

Testa served as an assistant coach for the University of Maryland-Baltimore County from 2000 until 2003. In his final season at UMBC, the Retrievers took the second-largest leap in the preseason power rankings of any team in college lacrosse moving from 29th to 13th. In conjunction with that leap, UMBC's offense tallied 44 more goals in just one more game (95 in 2002-139 in 2003). Prior to his position at UMBC, Testa was an assistant coach with the United States Merchant Marine Academy for three seasons (1998-2000).

Testa played collegiately at Hofstra and served as a team captain his last two years while leading the Flying Dutchmen to a pair of NCAA tournament berths.
