Does anyone know if a rule that allows a ref to stop play when a defender acts as a goalie in the crease during play

umm nah i dont think there is i play crease and when our goalie takes off i step in

There have been many discussion on this becuase a few defensemen have died in the past couple of years from getting hit in the chest and having their hearts stop while they are "playing goalie". However, i dont believe this has not been officially disallowed atleast not in high school. Best way to find out is simply ask a ref at your next game

Yeah, Defense can go into the crease as long as they don't go in it with the ball
