Default Catching to Cradle

Alright, I'm starting my first year of lacrosse this March, I'm decent, not amazing but it's our towns first year so I'm probably not the worst. Anyway my coach always emphasizes that we should get into the habit of catching it, then immediately cradling it. Some of the experienced kids on my team that played in other towns before, catch it, then do this cool little twirl thing. I catch it, then have a 2-3 second time period in between my catch and cradle. What I'm worried about is that this 2-3 second time period is to long and I will get hit and loose the ball. My question to you all is is the twirling good, or is it better to actually cradle. If it's better to twirl, how do you do that. If it's better to cradle, how can I get less time elapsed between the catch and cradle? I'm clueless! Thank you for any help and advice that is given!

Its better to craddle. Twiriling really does nothing. It will come with practice. Play wallball and keep practicing and you will have it down pat.

i can do this with my right hand but still working on it with my left. Always do as much work with your left hand as you do with your right.

the twirl is just a waste of time. just catch and give it a good cradle to make sure the ball is seated in your stick. and if you're worried about getting it checked out of your stick, if your running down field, dont let your stick drop down to your hip, cradle up near your shoulder so that you're always ready to pass or shoot, and if they go for the stick, they'll probly hit helmet and there's a penalty
