My son just joined box lacrosse this year (11 yrs old) and is running and playing wall ball alot. Does anyone have any training ideas or a routine which he should follow to improve his skills. He is very eager to learn and wants to spend every waking hour cradling, passing and playing in the outdoor court. Any help would be appreciated.
If he has a friend who also plays, have them throw around. It will help much more. Have him draw up a box goal on a wall and aim for corners. If he can master that skill, he will be very deadly. I will see if I can find some drills in my big book of drills. I will post them up.
Thanks, I will keep an eye open for the drills. I also have him running 3 days a week and then on the non running days, we head to the court and pass, shoot, wallball and then finish up with speed and endurance running. The funny thing is, he is very eager and wanted this, ironic for a kid that has never played organized team sports.
Its good to see him get interested in this. Lacrosse is truly an amazing sport. Does he have anyone else to hoost/pass around with? This can help me find a few drills. Any goalies?
I go with him to the box, no goalie, unless we can talk his 8 yr old sister to put on the pads...lol. I am better at hockey than lax and I can see him surpassing my skill set within a month or two...
Everythibg your doing is perfect. One little thing u can do to make his shot faster is stick a somewhat heavy pole inside his shaft. Also if he's that serious in playing lacrosse buy a goal for him because now he would be able to just go out and practice whenever he wants everyday

Thanks eagle4615, My son had his first game today and he did great for a first yr player being 11. Never played organized sports before and he loves the roughness of lax. Him and I are always out throwing the ball, but I can only take so much of his cross checking practice, my arms are going to fall off cuz he is a strong kid. I will put a piece of pipe in his stick for practice to quiken his shot. Any help would be appreciated as he is eager to learn, he would rather train for lax than anything else which is great to see in a kid.
WORK THE LEFT HAND SHOT!!! I cant stress how important this is
for speed shots take a tennis ball full of pennies and throw it around,
take two goals (if you have them) and set one in front of the other shoot over the first into the second. have him practicing picking up groundballs on the sprint.
other than that what your doing is good.
Athlete.com has alot of good training advice for anything you need to know about any sport
