Default Youth stick recommendations??

My 9 year old son is playing lax for the first time and absolutely loves it! He's wearing me out practicing constantly and I would be stunned if he doesn't stick with it. I bought him an introductory Gait setup that has a Gait 6000 alloy shaft and a Phoenix head. He's a pretty good athlete with exceptional hand-eye coordination.

So, knowing what you lax veterans know now, I'd like to get him a nice setup for later this year. What should I get him that is quality and will allow him to grow with it??

Many thanks!

First off, welcome to the forums!

Before I get into equipment, let me give you a tip:
Make your son use his off hand. For every pass he does with his right, make him do one with his left. He may hate it at first, but years from now, he will love you for it. Having two decent hands is better than one good hand.

Anyway... as to a head, you're not going to want to get him a very pinched (narrow) head. Getting a somewhat wider one will ease with catching, and enforce fundamentals with cradling. The STX Proton+ is a good head, as well the Warrior Mojo. If you hunt around a little, you can find them for pretty cheap.

With shafts, it really depends on how much you want to spend. I'd get him something in the 50-60 dollar range. Not too expensive, but enough money to get you something decent. Maverik's Gravity and STX's Vanadium are both pretty nice, but for an extra 10 you can treat him and get the Gaid db803.

Again, make him use his left hand, it's really going to help him in high school. Good luck finding the gear, and I hope your son sticks w/ lax- it's really fun at the higher levels.

Welcome to the forums first of all...glad to see your son starting at such a young age. Heres what i think of you and your sons situation. Your move for buying him the introductory head/shaft was a good move so that he can learn the basic fundamentals of the game. Now that he is getting better you feel the need to get him something of more quality. There are many heads and shafts on the market now that are overpriced and that wouldn't be a very good buy for someone of his age and experience. In the heads i would recommend the Gait Triton or Warrior Mojo. and Shafts i'd say go either with the Warrior Platinum Alloy or the STX Vanadium. The choices i've made at his age should last him for a while. As he keeps getting better he may want to upgrade shaft and maybe want to update heads. All of us as we start to learn the game we figure out the style of head we like. I personally am a fan of warriors shafts but do not like any of there heads. So i use STX heads. Ordering sticks online is a more cost effective way to go about buying him something new. Good luck and hope that you find your son something that he'll do good with and continues playing.

Gait Triton - The Lacrosse Equipment Superstore
- Has a pretty nice pinch too it, but not too drastic for a moderate level player. The triton is very dependable to and at his level he should be able to use it for a while.

Warrior Mojo- The Lacrosse Equipment Superstore
- Pretty nice head although i'd still go for the triton over this...this is also more expensive

Platinum Alloy - The Lacrosse Equipment Superstore
- Shaft is really good for its price. I had a black one as my 2nd shaft and loved it. The thing dinged up after use (freshman year in HS) but still is standing. I think your son would be able to use this shaft for a while at his age.

STX Vanadium - The Lacrosse Equipment Superstore
- Also a very nice shaft for his age. Its priced appropriately like the platinum alloy but i'd rather give you a couple options for things

Brine Motive is good, also the Warrior Mojo. For shafts I'd say pretty much anything cheap because at that age, he's probably not going to break any shafts.
