Because the stick can't be fixed. If it was pocket depth it would only be 1 min. non releasable.

I believe also you couldn't use that stick again (for that game under those refferees). Correct me if I'm wrong as I don't know the rulebook by heart.

You are correct. You can't use a stick for the rest of the game if there is an unfixable problem like a large sidewall, too pinched, short shaft, etc...
