Default goalie skills

Like a few other threads I read, I too was converted from defense to goalie this year

I am ok at reading penalty shots since you know the angle they are shooting at, but the normal shots where the girl is running in is harder to block.

I also flintch when its a shot close to the crease and even worse at my head...its such a natural reaction, I can't help it and try hard not to, but I dont know how to prevent it

Lastly, since I played defense first, it has become habit when there is a shot on my non-dominant hand to move my whole body and shoulders to attempt to block the ball instead of just moving the stick real quick to the left (if that makes sense)

Any suggestions for drils or techniques that I could practice??

Welcome to the forums and being a new goalie! Everyone knows goalies are gods of the field:P

Flintching is a natural reaction. This is a drill I learned. Lie down flat on your back with your helmet on. Have a friend take a tennis ball and drop it onto your helmet. Try this for a few days and get back into the net. See if it has changed your reaction towards a ball coming at your head.
I have played a lot of hockey and some boxla goalie. I have taken many shots towards the head. I used to duck but now, I stand my ground.

To your last question. If I understood it properly, you are saying that you are putting your body infront of the ball behind your stick? If so, then just work on taking some shots towards the non-dominant side. Use a tennis ball if you need to. If you cannot find a net and a friend, then go to a flat wall. Stand about a sticks length away. Take the ball and throw it to your non-dominant side. Remember to step towards the ball. With practice, it will become a natural thing.

Good luck and keep us updated!

ok...thank you for your advise! I'll def. have to try that soon!! ...I tried about a week ago to just stand in goal and had team members shoot on me without a stick to get rid of the fear and get in the habit of putting my body behind the ball;but I'm not sure on how well it worked...
