Default New to Lacrosse

Hey everyone.

I'm primarily a hockey player, but wanted to get into lacrosse, so this year I'll go out for the team. Our school's small, so no one gets cut, which is reassuring, because I'm guaranteed a spot, but I also want to be good, and not ride the bench. My high school always had LAX as a club sport until last year, and we went undefeated. So it'd be cool to play for a good program too.

So what are the basics of the game I should learn, obviously the rules, but besides that, what's really essential?

Thanks

TK

Have you gone out and gotten a stick yet? If you have, I would recommend you throw the ball around with friends or against a wall. It would be a lot better knowing how to throw and catch on the first day of practice so you can impress your coach with your first year skills and actually play games.

I would watch some game videos as well. It helps a lot watching films.

Are you playing box or field?

Yes, I have a stick, and I will take my ball and just toss around against the wall to work on catching. I'll also practice cradeling too. I'll have to watch some games, but I have seen a few college matches. I play field lacrosse.

Get used to your stick, carry it around and just develop your stick as an extension of your body. It shouldn't feel weird doing anything and you should develop a kind of flow after a while. All new players tend to overthink things and try to hard. Relax. just pass around withfriends and a wall alot and find somewhere you can shoot. go for a run in the woods and take your stick with you. Cradle, switch ahnds, dodge trees. be creative and develop your game.

Just walk around your house cradling the stick. Throw the ball against a wall at school. Everything other people have said.
