I do not think that your team needs to be 1st or 2nd to have a good goalie. Yes they are good but you need to also look at weather the team is scoring 10+ goals a game or how close the games are.
As for me, I would consider myself as a good goalie in field. I am on a team which is not good offensively and is ok at defence. I have saved my team on many occasions and have given them a chance at wining. I have been complimented on my play by opposing players, refs, and coaches.
