Yes that is why during the Industrial Revolution, the proletariat were put into such miserable conditions as to put their main concern into survival, not the creature comforts even poor people today take for granted. By doing so, the bourgeoisie were able to pay little to nothing for unquestioning workers that would labor at well over %100 to support their families. Only once the union came around could workers have a fair shair.
