William & Mary Announces Schedule for 2008
Williamsburg - William and Mary lacrosse head coach Christine Halfpenny today released the Tribe's 2008 schedule, which is highlighted by four contests against 2007 NCAA tournament teams. The Tribe will open the campaign on the road Wednesday, February 20th at state-rival Longwood, marking the fourth consecutive season W&M has faced the Lancers. W&M has won two straight and holds a 14-1 all-time edge in the series.
W&M will open its home schedule the following Sunday on February 24th, hosting NCAA participant Duke at Albert-Daly Field. The Blue Devils advanced to the Final Four last season. Following the home opener, W&M will play its next three games on the road, starting with a February 27th contest at Virginia Tech. The Tribe has only faced the Hokies one time, a 16-12 W&M victory in Williamsburg in 2002. W&M then makes the short trip to Richmond to face the two-time defending Atlantic 10 champion Spiders on March 2nd. One week later, on March 9th, W&M visits Penn State.
Following the three-game road stretch, W&M returns to action at Albert-Daly, hosting NCAA runner-up Virginia on March 12th. The Cavaliers have won the last two ACC championships and advanced to the national title game in four of the last five seasons. W&M is back on the road on March 19th, visiting Georgetown, before hosting a pair of West Coast teams to close out the non-conference portion of the schedule. The Tribe will host Stanford on March 25th in the first meeting between the programs, before entertaining California on March 28th. The Golden Bears evened the all-time series with the Tribe at 1-1 with an 11-10 victory in Berkeley last season.
The Tribe opens conference play on April 4th, traveling to rival James Madison. It will mark the 55th all-time meeting in the series, and W&M will be looking for its fourth-straight victory over the Dukes. The opening weekend of conference play includes a home date against George Mason on Sunday, April 6th. W&M then has a two-game road swing at Drexel (April 11th) and at CAA defending champion Hofstra (April 13th), before closing the regular season with a three-game homestand against league opponents. The Tribe hosts Towson on April 15th, followed by Delaware on April 20th and Old Dominion on April 24th.
The CAA Championship is scheduled for the weekend of May 2-4. The league's top four teams will participate in the tournament, which will be hosted by the conference regular season champion.
