Villanova Men's Lacrosse Sets 2008 Schedule
VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Villanova men's lacrosse team is wasting no time jumping into action this upcoming spring as the Wildcats open the 2008 season on Sunday, February 17, against nine-time NCAA Champion Syracuse University. The Wildcats have not played the Orange since 1991, when Syracuse handed Villanova a 19-8 loss.
"We have put together an extremely challenging out of conference schedule," says Villanova head coach Mike Corrado. "This should help us prepare for the challenges that lie ahead in the Colonial Athletic Association."
In addition to the season-opener against the Orange, the 2008 schedule will prove to be just as challenging as previous years as the Wildcats are set to battle some of the top programs in the nation. Villanova will take on five opponents that finished the season ranked in the top-20 of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division I Poll, which includes No. 11 Notre Dame, No. 14 Towson, No. 15 Delaware, No. 17 Drexel, and No. 19 Ohio State. The Wildcats will also face a slew of in-state rivals during March as they travel to the University of Pennsylvania, Penn State, and Lehigh, while playing host to Lafayette in late February.
With six home and eight road contests, plus a string of highly competitive CAA games at the end of the season, Villanova will need strong leadership from their 2008 captains, seniors Chris MacDonald, Ryan Holloway, Matt Panneton, and junior Eddie DiDonato. The talented quartet is expected to guide a squad boasting 24 returning players, as well as 10 newcomers. After finishing with an overall record of 7-7 last season and marginally missing a berth to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament, the Villanova men's lacrosse team is anxious to return to the field and make another run towards post-season conference play this spring.
